Anyone know why sites aren't picked up by google.

A project site setup by a collaborators of our more than 3 months ago still hasn't been indexed and I can't figure out why

The site is https://www.faang.org/

I don't think we are widely linked so I don't expect to be in the searches when someone is searching just on the name FAANG but I would hope that terms like FAANG genomics or FAANG epigenomics would work or even phrases from the website like

Quote:
A coordinated international action to accelerate genome to phenome

but nothing

It has an appropriate robot.txt file

Our twitter account links to it https://twitter.com/faangomics

Any ideas?

Have you tried this? Don't know if it makes a difference, but I would hope it would speed up the process of being recognised by Google.

Getting a few links out there from decent sites will help. In fact I expect posting it here will have sorted it shortly.

The chap who is running the site has it listed in google webmaster tools apparently but nothing

Sean, a link to it from here you would hope would help but not even faang downsizer.net has this thread on the front page

You need to promote theme in some way Google Webmaster Tools is one way of kick starting the process but there are other search engines to consider. You may find Bing has already indexed the site for instance.

You'll also stand a better chance if the sites is mobile friendly.

Promote the site on social media, keep plugging away. Promoting sites can be a long term commitment and may take several months before you start to see results.

A Bing search for "genome to phenome" lists the site in the first page of results.

I understand this, I am just surprised that quite specific searches don't get it on the front page for google where as another project site we set (dcc.blueprint-epigenome.eu) ended in the top 5 results pretty quickly without much effort with similarly specific search terms (dcc blueprint)

I am not hoping for FAANG to get it, that is a common asian surname, we will never be on the front page by name but I was hoping to be on the front page with FAANG genomics or FAANG epigenomics

I know you need to consider other search engines but the simple fact is that google has the majority of search market, not being indexed properly by google is a a problem

I am intrigued that no one seems to index https://www.faang.org just other pages, any ideas why that might be?

Lack of content maybe one reason and the HTML is not as well structured as to could be as there is no semantics e.g. <html> should really be preceded with <!DOCTYPE html> and ideally be decorated with a language attribute e.g. <html lang="en">.

Use H1 H2 H3 elements and where application break these down into sections using <section> <header> <footer> element appropriately.

I'm only scratching the surface but a well structured HTML document will get better rankings.

The dcc.blueprint-epigenome.eu uses the Twitter Bootstrap framework which imposes some degree of structure. It's speculation this may contribute to better search engine rankings.

Thanks

It is frustrating that we don't control the html in the same way we do for the blueprint site, I am contributing content but the site is built by someone else. These sorts of tips will help though
