i saw this on click and thought it a rather good idea.a few years back my heating was a tower pooter build to run a block 50 f16 sim which acted as a 1.25kw fan heater

iirc there was ds discussion re using the "waste" heat from pooter cooling to dry jerky ,im not sure if anyone has tried it yet.

i would happily have a few servers as heating in the winter but has anybody considered what happens in summer?even if there is no need for heating there will still be a need for servers.

The potential is for distributed processing power. The radiator server in your home is processing data for someone else, although it could be for you, and using the heat that would otherwise be normally wasted to be used a bit more effectively. Obviously during the non-heating season there is much less of a benefit.

I write this as a power user with servers across the globe who's just heard the electric radiator in his office click on but whose data processing capability, while being binary, is limited to a slow on/off cycle.

i recon places/processes that require constant low temp heat delivered by warm air would be ideal "consumers"for this but as domestic heating i recon the summer and the always on thing might be a problem.

perfect for a jerky factory

I have often wondered about the prospect of an energy recovery system on top of a server farm, but I am told that they are simply not interested... and disinterested to the extent that they often rather let things melt and replace them than sort out the cooling properly.

An existing data centre wouldn't be an ideal candidate and I'm not sure how security compliance would be achievable which is perhaps the most difficult stumbling block.

How is security currently served with the air conditioning engineers that they have already?
Why would energy recovery engineers be a greater security risk?

I was thinking more along the lines of data centres below living spaces or distributed computing as per the article rather than existing data centres.

the chap on the telly reckoned it was more secure as everything is encrypted ,it is processing capacity rather than storage and all the eggs are in different baskets.

Like a lot of these things access to fibre optic will be a requisite which rules out a lot of the more rural here on DS.
Wont solid state technology reduce the amounts of cooling necessary?
