It's four years old, and I have no reason to replace otherwise - I've cleared some space on a back up usb stick that was flashing red and, touch wood, it hasn't done the same thing again, with the same programmes working.

We bought a 1terabyte external hard drive to put all our pics on to a) keep the pc running fast and b) keeping the pics safe.

How exactly did it stop?

What was the error message?

Hard to advise anything without knowing. You have sufficient space.

I was backing up Quickbooks & left the PC while it did it. When I returned the 'start pc normally' or (something like) 'check for problems' options were on a black screen. I chose the latter and it said something about the disk space possibly being an issue, on a blue screen. I shut it down and left it for a bit then came back to it and everything appears to be working fine. The only thing I've lost is the latest data on Quickbooks.

Thanks. I've just taken a look and they're cheaper than I was thinking.

If it's done a checkdisk then it's probably fine, just make sure you keep your data backed up. If it happens again then worry about it.

I'm not sorried, just wndering the best way to keep the data backed up. The issue may not be the disk, but it can't be helping and I need to add more of it so it's only going to get worse.

external back up drive is a rather useful tool but a bit messy to use as a data drive.if the machine will take one adding another hd inside to act as data storage while the os runs on the original might help

Start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk clean up.

Run that and let it delete all the temp files and things that come up. Temp files can build up and slow your machine down.

I suspect with the error message that came up the weather made your power dip and your machine restarted but without shutting down properly.

Remember, backup, backup, backup.

So, anyway, what is the best/most reliable form of extra memory?

Well, obviously eating lots of grassfed meat is the way to achieve that.

external hard drive ,most have an auto backup setting if you plug it in to a usb port or they can be used just for storing data(rather than the os and the data)

a tb is a reasonable size and not too expensive

extra ram can be got and plugged into the motherboard with nowt but a screwdriver to open the case(this needs to be compatible with the machine, external drives tend to be universally compatible

i dont know much about external solid state drives except you get less storage per £ and they are very fast which is useful if using it as part of the machine rather than just for extra space.

if the machine has space for another drive inside it it needs a little setting of jumpers and some commands for the os to get one drive to hold the os and the other holds data

I cannot see much sense to a solid state external drive with a normal internal drive: better to put the SSD inside the box.
