I think it's probably Succinea putris, but have you more pictures to show? If you have one that wouldn't show the shell interior if the shell was empty (so one just sees the edge of the opening), that might help. Hope I've explained what I mean clearly.

as you can see there was a tenant

iirc the edge of the mouth of the shell had a small outward flange

if i can find that one or another or empty shell i will get a photo looking into the shell.

first one i have seen in the bramble bed ,it is quite damp and we are very close to the river so the habitat sort of fits

that parasite on the s.putris wiki page is horrible but the snail does quite look like the ones in google images but it is perhaps a bit paler ,maybe they are quite varied/coloured by diet etc .

thanks .

ps i had no idea there were so many uk snail species, nice wee critters unless they are munching carefully raised seedlings.

My (more or less) tame snail expert says "'probably Succinea putris'. If it was very large (above 20mm) the identification is safe; otherwise, a pale body strongly suggests S. putris, but can't quite rule out Oxyloma elegans (= pfeifferi) which usually, but not quite always, has a blackish body. )

Since he makes no other suggestions I don't think further photographs will help. Best look for a bigger one!
