I couldn't decide where to post this and here seemed as good a place as any.
It is very sad about all these whales getting washed up on the North Sea coast, but is nobody else bothered about the waste?

I don't know what could or should be done with them, nor indeed what they do do with them, but I have heard at least one mention of landfill, which seems like a crazy thing to do...

if you didnt kill it and there is no obvious recent traumatic cause of death dont eat it (unless in dire straits) applies as much to whales as to anything else.

my option for dead whale on a beach is tug with a long rope and sink it off shore with a few well placed holes to avoid bloating using a few heavy lumps tied to the deceased to sink it .then the crabs etc can have a nice dinner for ages with no distress to the public.

when i was a kid i watched one with a fair bit of explosives under it (it was quite dramatic) to distribute the stinky bits,it wasnt very successful as the tide carried them in and out and up and down and the gulls dropped odds and ends around the town for weeks.

land fill is daft but it might give a future archaeologist a bit of a puzzled frown

Eating road kill that's been clipped by the wheels of a car is one thing, but eating a meal where you don't know how it's died is another.
Although it's often boat propellers & seismic testing that are the cause of demise it's as often a build up of pollutants & plastic.
There's good reason to consider them a potential biohazard.

Post mortems are consistently coming back as starvation/dehydration: they're lost in shallow water with nowt to eat.

Actual cause of death, I think has a lot to do with having a whale lying on their ribcage: makes it a little hard to breathe I believe, though I've not tried it myself.

the unfortunate ones landing on north sea coasts are deep water feeders so lost in a shallow sea is consistent with that ( and in some cases lying on their brisket out of water) as a cod

there are many possible reasons suggested for them being in the wrong place but afaik no proven one.

ps whale aint very nice to eat ,the meat is horrible and the blubber is a bit like a carry mat dipped in fish oil.
worse than seal imho.
unless you are starving or might starve later just dont even consider it as food

pps they do burn well should fuel be hard to find.

Whatever the cause is likely impossible to prove it.

I don't have the means to go collect it, so I wasn't thinking o eating it myself, but accepting what you say, there may still be potential for it as dog/pig/fish/Hugh food. Or send it off to Japan.

I've been hearing there is quite a lot of palm oil getting washed up also: seems to me somewhat easier as a fuel supply.

Whale meat is rather nice, like the tenderest steak with a hint of liver, but never tried blubber.

each to their own .i found the meat too over hung gamey and rather tough for my tastes.i spose i might not have had a good bit in best condition but unless im starving along with the rest of the village i recon they are safe from me

my description of blubber even if it is a "delicacy" is very accurate

Perhaps we should have a competition for the best one?
