I know that we have one or two nutters on here so I thought that this would be the place to ask for a little bit of advice on walnut varieties.
Over the weekend we went to the Chatsworth Country Fair and stopped for a couple of nights in Ashbourne. We stayed in a Hoe Season Lodge on a nicely set out woodland site. They'd retained many mature trees, amongst which were some super walnut trees. They were absolutely loaded with big walnuts and tons of grey squirrels too. It set me thinking (which in my case is usually quite dangerous) and this morning I've had a quick look on this site.

Over the years, we've had most of our apple trees for the orchards from these people and always found them dependable but as you'll see, there really is quite a choice to pick from.
Have any of you nutters got any recommendations as to which ones to go for, or possibly to avoid?

If I buy some, I'll probably get some of these while I'm at it.

Broadview and Bucaneer were the first varieties sold as suitable for the UK but they're not particularly brilliant, both very blighty here. I haven't got Excelsior of Taynton, Saturn or Sychrov. Rita, Provslavski and Plovdivski were planted later so haven't really fruited much yet.

Some are definitely better than others but it's so marginal that I'd just get a mix, same with the hazels, except Tonda di Giffoni which is the earliest ripening. Bear in mind that if you're going to dry the nuts then it's much more painful to get the nuts out of Webbs and Kentish cob.

I've probably asked before but do you buy direct from Frank Matthews? I've looked at them before but they suggest you have to buy from a local nursery and the ones round here don't stock much.

If you can buy direct how do you go about it?

TC, I've always bought as trade. If I do get some walnuts from them I'll also have 20 Discovery apple trees at the same time. As an example of the prices I've been paying, the trade price comes in at £4.90p for the apple trees.

Did you just phone up and ask and do you need a minimum order?

I don't think I'll be buying much for this winter but hopefully 2017/18 I would be able to get a few dozen nut trees in. (So I'd be very interested to hear how you get on).

They're really nice people, just ring and ask. I'm sure if you pick up then minimums will be quite small.

If everyone didn't live so far apart I'd gladly get you some along with my order but we're 33 miles away from the nearest set of traffic lights, let alone anywhere else.

Just for info my Broadview walnuts are already dropping their nuts, far to early compared to other years, which is normally 2nd week of October.
