Thanks for the information on the leaves Jam Lady. I am hoping to gather at least some up and put them in plastic bags to make leaf mould, but they will be wet and not all brown.
When I was a child there were still a few old people in the US that could still remember your Civil War. They must have been children at the time, but it makes you realise how relatively recent some things are. As our Civil War happened in the 17th century, one reason for a lot of your early settlers, it is way beyond living memory.
Spent a good part of the day in the woods yesterday. Husband and son were cutting hazel coppice, but as some looked as if it had last been cut in the mid 1960s when the whole lot was last systematically cut, some of the stems were huge. One they had to put a felling cut in before they could cut it down.
My job was to pull out and cut up the tops and burn as much as possible. We got a fair bit cleared, and they are pretty well at the ash tree they want to fell. It was too windy to do any felling of big trees yesterday, but the forecast for today and tomorrow are good, so they will probably carry on clearing today and fell tomorrow. |

I don't remember saying it was my birthday, but then again I don't remember very much these days of what I said 5 minutes ago, so could have said something, more by accident than as a fishing exercise. It was un-eventful, but my neighbour gave a coffee sponge cake as usual covered in coffee icing; she knows me well! We have been friends and neighbours for a long time and I am there for her as her husband died a few years back now and so I 'help', like cutting trees, hedges, firewood and the like. I ran the children round for quite a while to help out. They were such good friends to me, I was and still do repay that friendship whenever I can. She also looks after me when I come out of hospital-I always feel safe there as she was both a theatre sister and intensive care sister prior to her 4 children., and they say you must not be alone on the first night out of hospital.
Yes, MR., I think DT will upset a lot of folk one way or another, but correspondingly he got massive support so I won't be knocking him. Whether I like him is another story. There have been lots of folks saying that his Scottish exploits have upset a lot of people, but I don't know anything about this golf club or if he did things that he wasn't supposed to! Time will no doubt sort it out-we will know how much the man is loved if he gets a second term in office. I have a feeling there may be more a meeting of minds with Putin and Trump! They are poles apart in fitness and size, but both seem like despots to me-ask the question after you have done the deed.
Thank you too for the birthday wishes, Cassandra I really can't remember putting that fact down on paper anywhere. Now don't go lighting a fire if you don't need it; there will be times when you are out of wood, but need a fire. And just think how warm you will get cutting and gathering all that grass-make it into hay for those poor horses next door! How is the planning situation coming along? Here in the UK you would be wanting to put up a serious monstrosity if the local authority made you apply publically for planning for a shed even if on the larger side.
Now there is a thought; we could all move to Tasmania and form a like minded folk commune, where property is cheap! (Well only a thought in reality). |

I don't do face FB. MR., much too complicated for me; I am even older than I was last week by a whole year. Can't remember when I qualify for the free television license-when I do I will buy a TV! I have survived for a long time without, not sure how. I visit friends who have every conceivable channel, and they constantly flick from this to that and it really annoys me. The radio is enough for me as I can work and listen, but watching tv and chopping wood doesn't go somehow. Anyway I am happier with a hatchet in my hand than a remote controller. Thinking on, as I do-you could find a suitable market for the spoons that are to be done in bulk at shops like Liberty's. They could come and watch you make the first 10 and off you go and buy a spoon maker and pretend...think of the fortune at the end of the field maple. I do have a vivid imagination-oops! Reading about thin stems in hazel do they make the best slats for weaving? even if not long?
It does look as though Donny is going to calm down, thank goodness. I didn't think Hilary was whiter than white but preferable to Donald, from whom, I guess the Scots are now trying to put some distance.
I am off to get another shed out of hiding and erect that at home as a wood store. It was made as a hut for a children's garden shelter for play group but they decided after I had put it together not to use it, so I will. Come in useful for storing up to 16ft long. It has slatted sides so will keep it 'fresh' and dry ready for when it meets its fate-kindling-selling like mad right now I also have to sort out my scrap metal, I have quite a lot, but scattered. A skip may well be in order. |

If you have a local scrap merchant you may be able to sell the metal. We have taken a few bits to our local one, and although not a fortune, we have got a few pounds back on it.
I am reserving some of the rods that are a bit too thin for even binders for hedging (may be called something else where you are) to split down to make baskets if I ever get round to making one. There are also some very thing bits that would make baskets, but hazel is not really the preferred material, although I might give it a go one day if I ever get the time and energy together.
Have you actually made your move yet or are you still gathering yourself together for it Gregotyn?
We did a show yesterday. Not brilliant, but talked to a reasonable number of people and may get the odd order from it. Trouble was it was inside and we were rather crammed in, which made it tricky to get DIL in and out from behind the table when she wanted to get out, but with a bit of rearranging all was managed all right. Son had brought some leather tooling to do, and I had a go. Managed moderately well, but it is his thing not mine. He managed to tool 3 bracelets; 2 with an ivy leaf design and 1 with a Celtic knot. |

Chilly last night at minus 1.6 Centigrade. Last cannas dug and in tool shed waiting to be brushed free of extraneous soil, packed in peat moss and moved to garage.
Power line right-of-way pruning crews (there's an image in Chat's View Out My Window) dumped a couple of loads of wood chips at the bottom of the driveway for me. Glad to have them but they spilled over onto the lower parking area so I need to deal with that before the snow flies.
Young man has started moving firewood he previously cut. His ATV & cart is wider than Mr Jam Lord's so the path I marked out is not quite wide enough. Wouldn't be an issue except he ran over three late autumn blooming snowdrops and crushed them. I understand - they're small and hard to see but I thought they were safe. Rather sad about this.
Yesterday was rock garden chapter end-of-year meeting. Members bring appetizers and desserts, club provides entrees (provided by a supermarket catering department I believe) which were meatballs in sauce, chicken piccata, and creamy cheese tortellini. I brought a chocolate sponge jelly roll which I cut into 4 pieces then made a chocolate filling and a chocolate frosting. Speaker was national group's president who spoke on uncommon greenhouse / alpine house bulbs for fall and winter. Excellent topic for me, beautiful pictures but he went on and on and on. And on. He brought a beautiful nerine to raffle, which didn't happen. Gee, do you think maybe we ran out of time? So it was given to me because I already grow a couple of species in my greenhouse.
Which has a new thermostat installed after we got home yesterday. The old one was somewhat flaky and since it is kept at 10 degrees Centigrade there's not that much wiggle room on cold windy nights. New one is digital, appears to be much more precise / reliable.
Tomorrow is the press preview for the holiday train show at the New York Botanical Garden. Always fun, and Mr Jam Lord enjoys it too.

I am surprised that the man wasn't told how long he was to speak for. We are normally told, and when the break is. Difficult to judge a talk that runs for an hour when there is a break part way through, but we usually manage by keeping a strict eye on the time. Otherwise sounds a good day.
Nerines grow outside here and have seen a reasonable number around. They have been in flower for a month or so now. We have never grown them, so don't know too much about them, but they seem to be hardy here.
Had to go out to get some more bread flour yesterday, so we went on to Southampton to do a bit of shopping. DIL had asked for a particular book for her birthday, so needed a book shop and a few other bits. We walked back to the car park through the park, and saw some lovely maples; one deep red, the other shades of green, yellow and orange next to each other. Husband got some pictures, but not looked to see if they have come out well yet. |
