I have sheds full of accumulated "stuff" that I need to clear. I used to take stuff to the tip when I was younger, fitter and had a larger van (no commercial lettering on it, and no trailer, twin-axle or otherwise, they do you for that.)
In the past, over 30 years ago, and not this property, when I was clearing my parents' house and garden of "stuff" prior to selling it, I hired a small skip which was a joy.
What are the pros and cons of doing this now? What isn't one allowed to put in it (toxic waste obviously). Do they go through it and charge you accordingly? Obviously electricals, etc have a place at the tip so they wouldn't go in, but as to sorting it all - well, time and health is running out.
I'd appreciate some advice (and comfort)!
I'm talking about the Ceredigion area.

Round here, they deliver, you fill it way way way above the fill to here line, using doors as a giant version of how you raid the salad bar at Pizza Hut, then they take it away. Anything goes.

But it's all landfill tax so expensive. OMB will have a much more sensible answer but I suspect it depends on your local supplier.

no blatently toxic, no asbestos, everything else is ok

round here £220 for 6 cu m plus street licence (£150 for loading on private land)

cheaper than legal wagon removal if the stuff is dense

get a drop end skip for ease of loading

small skips are a bit cheaper but not much and cost far more if you need a few

a good skip firm can recycle about 80% of waste so landfill costs are minimised overall

You won't be laughing when the driver levels it off and leaves it on your driveway - or just leaves the whole thing.
I don't use skips myself as I've a tipper and carriers license.
Yep it's all about the landfill tax though.

Lowri - Just tell them it's household waste / house clearance - they'll advise you on what can't go in, what they'd appreciate separating, or what incurs extra charges.
Different companies, different rules.
Generally no asbestos, fluorescent tubes or fridges.
Sometimes no plasterboard or keep it separate.
Possibly no TV's.
No fires

Some places I tip, now have supplementary charges for mattresses and sofas and ridiculous prices for TV and fridge disposal. The rules and restrictions increase every year.

If it can be recycled or disposed of other than in landfill, then most skip companies will extract the bulk of it because of the landfill cost. So if taking recyclables to the recycling centre is too much grief just chuck it in the skip and you can still sleep sound(ish).

Are you anywhere near Ecocentric? He had a big trailer and a fondness for "stuff"...

One thing to check is that the company is licenced. You can ask to see a copy, and they should also give you a ticket to say that you have disposed of the stuff to them. Whatever you do, make sure you use a reputable company as some fly tippers will offer to 'do the job cheap' and leave stuff all over the countryside. Not only is this offensive, but if anything is found that can be traced back to the original owner, they get fined as well.

We had a skip a few years ago.

The vibrations from the lorry caused the front garden wall to fall over.

The driver was most distressed but Domestic Facilities thanked him as it was going to be knocked down he had saved us the job..............

I have, as you can imagine being agricultural, gathered a lot of scrap metal. I thought they would deliver a skip and come back for it when filled up. not the case round here. They will hire a 5 cu. yard skip to me for £70 and deduct that from the scrap that was inside. I guess they send a large full of fuel lorry to bring the empty skip, whilst a smaller lorry with nearly empty fuel tank, comes back to collect the full skip! Am I a cynic?
On the council tip front there is a policy that you can take what you like and they will accept or reject. However, due to cutbacks the tip will be closed for 4 days a week and open Friday, Saturday and Monday I expect the queue on Saturday will be enormous. I have another council tax rise, but only £200 this year. I expect our county councillors to be getting yet another pay rise in the form of expenses too. I am not sure what the actual salaries for being a county councillor are, but 13k for an ordinary 'member' and over £30k for the inner cabinet members. I will be going for one of them as it beats the hours I currently have and there is tax deductible lunches involved! When I finally retire I will have time on my hands and I can go and serve the public.

I would trust the scrap yard I use.
I'm sure there are still some dodgy ones around but the 3 large scrapyards near me are as legitimate as any other business.

Re weighing your scrap.....the skip will either be weighed before hand (the weight might be painted on it)......or they will weigh the collection lorry on return, and again once it has emptied.
If it's just 'light iron'(general mixed steel) then you'll be lucky to break even at todays prices.

I have a lot of old farm machinery, and the inevitable corrugated sheets, I guess around 4-5 tonnes, current price is around £75/tonne. What I really want is someone who will load it, taking the grind out of the job! The people I trust are a Birmingham firm who come this out way, but they only like clean scrap from factories where the value is high! I guess I will bite the bullet and find a local man who "does anything."
