I think you are confusing me with someone else Gregotyn; I have never been to Ireland. Son and DIL went there a few years ago on holiday.

Depends what your logs are. If they are birch they might be too far gone, but most will last quite a while.

Your plum butter sound delicious Jam Lady. We are noticing some changes in leaf colour, maples in particular are turning slightly, and the beech trees look a little yellowy now.

Spent yesterday bagging logs again. We have an order for at least another 20 sacks, which are done, and I managed to complete another 20 yesterday, although I had already done 4. Have now run out of last years log sacks, but luckily the new supply arrived on Wednesday, so just in time. Prefer more of an overlap, but at least I didn't have to hold up any orders.

Sorry, MR. I thought I read you had been to a forestry do in Ireland, guess I miss read it; quite normal for me. They are ash logs I think on the trailer, but I will ask him exactly before I confirm. They are out in the elements at present and could really do with being under cover and wind to keep dry.

I don't have a lot to report today except from work where I spent a happy morning doing the normal distribution of the overnight deliveries and building a pressure washer for the shop; we have several varieties-most come ready made, but this one comes with no instructions, just a picture. My new boss has confirmed that it is ok, so I have guessed well for a change!

We are just about into autumn now Jam Lady, today being lovely sunshine, but not hot, and some of the leaves have fallen from some of the trees. It is about now that we get a few early frosts and that was so on Thursday night; not heavy and the roads were clear, but the first one nonetheless. Others at work, higher up the hills than me or more exposed, have claimed more.

I am off to the doctors again today, I tried to get my tablets, 3 days ago and was told it is not allowed-such a nuisance as I have been without for one of the tablets for 2 days now. I guess they think I am doing something wrong by being there a day early-forward planning I call it and I was already in the place for the dentist.

See you all tomorrow if the tablets are available-who knows? If they are not-there will be a battle if they are not ready.

If you have been without some of them for a couple of days, you need to get your prescription changed Gregotyn. It is probably important that you keep going with them.

These instruction 'manuals' with just pictures are not very good, as it doesn't show how to put things together properly. We had a bit of fun with out dishwasher, but it works now and seems to be rather better than the old one.

Food bank yesterday. Not sure how many we did in the end, but think it was about 9. When you are just assembling parcels you tend to lose count and only think about how you are going to give someone coffee when there isn't any.

Success with the tablets, I went in and a different lady fetched them for me as if nothing had happened; well she wouldn't know anyway. These tablets are for heart regulation, as are most of the others, and one to keep the airway open! It does appear that I can function without one of them at least-perhaps they are trying to tell me something or I am an experiment! They give me an aspirin a day too, been a bit of talk about them lately as to whether or not they are any use. What surprises me is that I have to take them dissolved with water and food. I have a friend a doctor in Australia and he says why don't they give me the coated aspirin as they go through the stomach acid due to the coating, but are released in the intestine due to the alkalinity?, he tells me the cost in Aus. is the same whichever you have.

Yes, the picture only instructions are worse than useless. I put up the new bed the then wife had chosen and instructed me to buy. I started at home after tea, 6pm., and missed match of the day at 10-11pm. as it was then! All due to pictures rather than diagrams and words to explain the workings. I guessed she chose that bed because it was the most complicated. I won in the end-she had trouble carrying the bed assembled into the bedroom as she would not let me take the old one down first "in case" it proved too hard to put the new one together. I am not blaming herself, but it would have been much better to go in the morning to do these things, if only in case something is missing, or because of interference with football. I wouldn't have that problem now-no tv!

I got home yesterday and denailed boards and chopped 6 nets, (est), of kindling, so quite pleased, and the aim is to do the same today and tomorrow then as the dark nights set in I will be able to cope with just weekend chopping and trips to the man with the machine. The kindler machine does not make the same job as hand chopping, but it saves my arm of a lot of pain-6"x 4" is demolished in less time than I can do it and all I have to do is reduce that to the sizes I want. I find the machine does the basic work but does not leave the "stick" tidy, if you know what I mean. I don't want little old ladies getting splints because of badly cut wood, coupled with that I have a good trade in the little offcuts too. Just got rid of a poly sack 6ft high by 2 ft diameter-about 5ft after tying up, so that is their winter taken care of.

I think I would have been very annoyed to loose a pot of plum butter, Jam Lady. Plum, black currant and apricot being my favourite jams. I buy jam now, but my mother always did the preserves, jams and bottled fruit all in the past; not so many folk want to find the time to do that sort of thing now. Called the television we didn't have one till I was 14yo.

The thing about picture-only instructions is that they are all-inclusive. Everybody can be puzzled by them, whichever language they speak.

If you have written instructions, then at least some people are going to be excluded if they don't speak the relevant language (or can't read, which I learn from the web is increasingly more common!).

Today is one of the infrequent hazardous waste disposal day for 3 counties. I consolidated old latex paint yesterday evening, got to the drop off place 1 hour 15 minutes early, and was third car in line. Once they started things going I was out of there expeditiously.

They took advantage of the captive audience to hand out information packets about preparing for emergencies. Flu, do you or neighbor need extra help in emergency, for pets have 2 weeks worth of water, food, a carrier or leash, copies of veterinary records, etc etc etc. This was a one size fits all. Easier to do, I suppose.

Beautiful clear cool sunny day. Himself will split wood later on this morning. If hunter who is here this morning says hello before departing I'll ask for help getting three large pots of tender plants indoors and upstairs. It's that time of year.

when i was doing techy chemical stuff i was responsible for waste disposal.

some of the things i extracted from badly kept stores would make me wonder what other folk might be sending off for "safe disposal "
drop and scoot makes lots of sense.

the sodium azide incident
i nearly had a siezure when i opened the can of what should have been sodium in oil to find most of 500gm had become azide over 20 odd years so i organized it to go as a special.
it had the proper packaging and paperwork but sometime after i waved it off in the "bomb resistant van " it somehow got put in their incinerator.
big style oops, no one was killed but they had to buy a rather expensive new incinerator.
after that i took a more up close and personal approach to the really bad stuff and made it safe by the most suitable means. ( in a few examples rather dramatically )

even the stuff the public might bring in on a toxic waste day might be far too interesting to linger near.

P.S. Hunter got a doe. He'll come next weekend with my share. And we'll use my meat grinder to do some venison for chili, chop meat, sausage for both of us.

And he brought my three big pots inside. One more to go. The rest I can manage.

Sounds a useful service Jam Lady. We have a few sites around that will take things like paint, but I think our nearest one is about 20 miles away, so not sure most people would bother with that.

Dpack, when I was working as a chemist, our new Chief Chemist got rather a shock when he went through the chemical cupboard and found rather a lot of bottles of sodium cyanide in the bottom. A predecessor of his had bought it to make up a cyanide plating bath and it had never been used.

Another time, a waste disposal tanker was sent to pick up a lot of wast acid, not from our works I might add, and they sent one without a rubber liner. Emergency on the by-pass as back of lorry got overheated and the fire brigade had to work out a way of transferring waste to another lorry and cooling that one down. Lots of interesting chemical stories out there I am sure.

I got some venison at the farm shop the other day. We have enough deer in our woods, but not sure if anyone is stalking in the woodland complex at the moment.

I spent a happy day yesterday delivering and filling log sacks. Delivered 20, made up 29 more, so store is gradually rising. Have tidied up the last lot of logs that husband and son dropped for me, so some put by for log loads, some stacked and seasoning more and the bits put in a dumpy sack for kiln firing or kindling.

I managed a lot of wood for the kindling yesterday and Saturday. A friend with a kindling splitter, cut at least 20 bundles worth on his machine on Saturday, and that has saved the pressure on my arm to a great extent. So when I get home I will be sorting that out between me and the machine I have added 34 nets to the tally. All good stuff when I will be away New Year.

I don't know of any free hazardous waste disposals round our way it always costs,a lot, not that I have any that I know of, unless paint enters that category. But what a good service, how lucky you are Jam Lady!

We have special sites that will take things like paint Gregotyn. You might find that your normal tip won't take it.

You are doing well with the nets. I have 49 log nets in store, but had an order for 20 yesterday, so will have to do some more as soon as I have the firewood.

I will go and look at the usual tip I use. My neighbour said she had taken some paint there and was refused; I think they will refuse me too when I try now, but I got rid of some last time I was there.

The kindling firewood is building up at home thankfully. There are also a lot of logs on my trailer that a friend brought to my place when he was kicked out of his family home (and birthright) by the uncle who died's will, who was farming there, and friend was supposed to inherit, but they had a bit of an upset over the friend's wife, as "happens" and it appears that uncle changed the will. He was lazy, the dear uncle and friend did most of the fieldwork apart from the sheep, which I used to help this uncle with anyway at the weekends. I am glad I am on my own-no outlaws-or brother and his family-to fend off, my will is signed and delivered to the solicitor and the beneficiaries know where they have to go to get their hands on the loot!

We have not really got into fires round here in a big way yet, a lovely day again today and quite warm. I am hoping the cooler stuff will start so that I can reduce my stocks and get some more netted up.

A serious mistake yesterday, I thought the flu jab was today, wrong-yesterday, but the nurse now has got me in tomorrow at 3.10pm-half way through the stint I will have on here!

People seem to be buying log sacks, so one of our outlets had 20 yesterday. Son is away for a few days, so husband and I delivered them. Still got some in stock, so hope we don't get a huge order until I can get some more made, just up to 20 at a time.

We have to sort out flu jabs. Son had his first one this year as for some reason his wife and we who had the flu jab last year got through without too much trouble. He had a really nasty cold/flu and it took him ages to recover. He hates injections, so must have impressed him no end.
