great tits really do sound like bicycle pumps my loss to dodgy vintage comedy aside, it is a very distinctive call and useful for knowing the species is around to be specific about the noise, the plastic and then better pumps with a greasy washer for 1970's basic practical iron bikes did a grand impersonation of them

The trouble with working with wildlife is that, as you say, they can do things you don't want. Examples are having to stop using equipment because a bird has nested in it, mice nesting in my besom material, badgers digging holes in unfortunate places and not seeing a badger latrine before stepping in it. They also go under, over or through anything put in their way, like fences and walls.

things that bite, sting, squirt, stab, poison and if they are large mangle are all quite interesting

for a sickener, explore a potentially useful fox lair, it has two ends, crawl to and out of the far end which opens onto a delightful if rather narrow and gravity challenged patio that foxy uses for dining

mr todd's back garden does not cover the situation, i was on my back as i crawled out onto it, i became more aware as i rolled over and knelt up

awesome layers of long and recently discarded bits of dinner, some bits were quite whole and a bit squishy when recent, they might have been maturing for later
i had to crawl back after appreciating the situation and the charming aspect it had chosen for a lair

rather a lot of soap etc did not help much

Apart from accidentally falling down a badger hole in the New Forest when I was out badger watching with a rather poor instructor, I haven't investigated where they live. We don't see our badgers, but do see where they have been. Possible watching our sawdust pile at certain times of year would be a good place as they burrow to get the grubs that live deep in it.

I don't know where the foxes live, but we do have them. I once met one trotting in the opposite direction along a path in broad daylight, but haven't seen them since; again, only their leavings.

the coal tit is feeding a nest, the sparrows seem to have accepted him as part of the greater flock

hopefully there will be lots of little grey things within a couple of weeks

note to self order worms seeds and ting at the mo they are chowing through the high value foods

right now i need to cook the dog's lunch, wildlife can be ginger

the never work with children and animals story can wait

the great tit is about as well, critters not seeds a mo ago

this early morning chris packham was talking about a show he did ages ago with kids and "nuanced "animals like tigers and rattlesnakes and such

many episodes, no problems

they decided to have a nice fluffy bring your rabbit episode

they brought, they were put on the lawn to look nice and safe and homely for the cameras

the rabbits did the two thing they do if they meet....

sex and extreme violence

these did both, and apparently it looked like a scene from caligula the movie

settlements were made for damage, wounds and trauma

not for broadcast

We heard a cuckoo in the woods the other day; the first we have ever heard. I think it was just passing through, which is good news for the small birds. The blue tits are still inhabiting the older kiln, and when son went to see what they were up to one of them spat at him. Husband and son moved some plastic corrugated roofing to get at the wood underneath yesterday and found a whole load of wood mice. Possibly mother and juveniles. They scattered anyway, but think I saw one of them on the way home last nigh about 10pm; the kiln took its time. Have to turn the birch again to make sure none have set up home in it.

the grey neck one of the daws fed on mealworms while i was 2.5 m away a small step on the path to pap snaps at close range, they are better than distance stuff which often looks flat, no matter how much detail is captured it does not get the intimate feel of up close snaps, ta Msr Bresson

The bluetits in our kiln are feeding young. Husband managed to get an umbilical camera in to look as we wanted to know if they had got chicks or eggs. Parents back feeding within a few minutes, so all well. Will have to wait until they are fledged and out before we can block the hole and use the kiln. Husband also met a fox in our yard in broad daylight yesterday. Fox took off in opposite direction. Our only other encounter with a fox in the woods was similar when I met one trotting along a path in the opposite direction to me. Know we have them; just don't see them very often.

wildlife, but not as we know it

this is odd and a bit yucky

i noticed a new "dropping" as i had recently hosed, then i noticed it was growing a bubble dome

i have an in progress and a just popped snap, it took about half an hour from dome to big dome and pop

never seen owt like it outside a 1950's B movie, and they did not have such good SFX as this thing

i will have to research if others have observed such a phenomenon

bird town is busy, the daws are accepting me at a few meters, the smalls are busy taking shopping to noisy nests, a fat woodie sorry 2 fat woodies

are exploring birdtown delights, the pigeons are doing pigeon stuff, the coal and great are both feeding nests(i might have heard the sounds of one or both, im not sure what noises the chicks make), there are sparrow chicks within earshot

busy

the latest sammisons seem to be chilled, and they like the mouse castle

a few swallows, no swifts or HM seen

the invertebrate farm is extensive and evolving, plenty of old chums, some new things, some old chums missing

i will get the daws used to the camera next, considering that a walking stick posing as a gun to the shoulder can freak the entire flock of daws(

it was educational) it may take a bit of work to get them comfy with "the beast"

tis a bit grey out at the mo and everything is wet, there is more interest in sunflower kernels when it is chilly baked goods are always popular, in moderation i recon carrion for the kites might be going too far in an urban yard the daws are quite choosy with meat
