This is often the coldest time of the year, but don't get despondant, and don't assume that means that there isn't any wild food to be had. This is truly one of the most exciting times for foraging, as it's the time when things are -just- starting to grow again.

As the days start to get longer, a lot of plants take that as a hint that spring isn't far off, so with a keen eye you can pick some wild gems that might make your winter walks more rewarding for you.

The inevitable chickweed is good right now; I don't know about your garden, but the flaming stuff is trying to eat my vegetable patch now. Also sorrel, dandelion, daisy and nettle are just throwing up their fiest shoots; the sweetest they'll have all year.

As for mushrooms, expect to find the occasional blewit, but look out especially for things like oyster mushrooms after the frosts. Although with winters as mild as the one we've had so far, don't be spooked if you find autumn mushrooms even now.

Thank you Cab, I was just about to ask the question myself as I have got the lack-of-foraging blues right now. I might go for a wander on Sunday and see what I can find.

Found a sad and battered oyster mushsoom on Friday but the good thing to see was the green leaves of the blue bells pushing through the leaf litter.
