...tomorrow!

Walking past a butchers today when doing a shop and noticed they had started to stock local free range birds. We've had a chicken already this week but I couldn't resist it.

Picture doesn't do it justice, but it's muscular without being bloated and the leg muscles are huge. The skin is tight, dry and strong. It looks like it's going to be one of the tastiest chickens I've ever tried.

In fact, I wish I had a picture of a supermarket organic chicken to show the difference between the two. Organic might have been fed the right food but you just know from looking that this bird has spent it's life outdoors on a varied and healthy diet.

Downside is that we have to economise, so the saturday night treat is now lentil and bacon soup. Still that's one less bag of pulses to lurk in the cupboard!

i was down at the farmers market on saturday and there was one stall selling free range chickens for between £15 and £25 each (is this normal?) they did not look as good as that one.

that does seam a bit steep, £9-£13 is more usual hereabouts (Beds) and they look pretty much like the one in the piccy. Once tasted I can't see why anyone would choose to go back to the bland/fatty/watery/sad supermarket variety, "organic" or not!

I pay about £5-£7 for mine; that's between 3-5lbs weight.

Looks like a mighty fine chicken to me. It's the colour that gives it away as much as anything - that and the firmness of the flesh.

How was it?

It was bloody lovely!

The skin was the finest part, sorry to gross you all out but it was ripped off and devoured my me and the kids as the bird came out of the oven. I cooked the bird simply with butter, seasoning, and some lemon and garlic inside. Poured some white wine into the tray whilst cooking for a simple gravy.

The meat had more bite to it without being stringy, yet it held a lot of succulence.

Oh, it cost me £9.20.

Can't remember the name at the moment ... we used to buy from him at the farmers market but he recently opened the farm shop so we go there now... its in a small village called Hare Street just East of Buntingford so just down the A10 from you.. turn left at the T junction as you come into the village from Buntingford and its on your left.
He also does ducks (more meat less fat than your average supermarket one) and beef, and also venison, but thats coming to an end now.

Fancy revealing your source? I'm only just over the border into bucks, and could do with a decent source of local-er chickens. At the moment, mine all come mail order, because I can't find anything good enough locally. It's welfare I'm concerned about mostly (although I won't buy them if they taste rubbish either!)
