Certainly made me think, now I am going to convert the saving into cash and wave it at my kids and say something along the lines of "If we keep this up I will go halves with you when the bill comes in lower than normal" as an incentive.

Hmmm, well I guess I could say that I definately did NOT achieve my goal of cutting our consumption by 50%!

Some excellent results though and thanks to Penny for organising this. I'm sure we have all learnt something about ourselves this week and hopefully many of us have been inspired to make some changes that we will carry forwards with us.

A very thought-provoking exercise - thanks for setting it up Penny.

My result was a bit cheaty as I didn't do any washing in the second week and I can't not do that on a long term basis . But the fan heater is a luxury I've proved I can do without .

Mindful use of electricity has made me aware of some lazy habits when cooking (e.g. turning the oven on, then not starting my cake-making promptly, so it stays on for much too long). It's also made me aware of the fact that my aged appliances aren't energy efficient - the fridge and/or freezer seem to be humming an awful lot of the time .

I'm going to continue monitoring my usage to see how it varies throughout the year, and hopefully maintain a reduction.....

I must have gotten my maths wrong - how embarrassing

Off to edit a post elsewhere ...!

Well done to everyone who had a bash and especial thanks to Penny from all of us for organising this whole event - it's been interesting and fun too.

I'll put my hand up and say our saving was due to working a 7 day week last week so not using things at home. God knows what the average power consumption is in an office, it seems common practice to heat them in winter and then adjust the temperature by using the air conditioning to dump excess heat outside.

I wonder if it would be possible to see how much people spend on home energy each year, i.e. electricity, gas, coal, wood, peat etc?

Yes thanks Penny, a real education!

I have realised how often I put the kettle on, only to forget and leave it, and then have to boil it again. I have also invested in some low energy light bulbs which I have been meaning to do for ever and never got round to it
I have also realised that the immersion heater doesnt need to be as long as it has to give plenty of hot water... might try adjusting the time down again see if it makes any difference.
I'm going to take a reading again next Sunday see if I can reduce it some more.

Now that I've got a baseline electricity consumption for two weeks, I'm also going to try saving more in the week to come, and take a reading next Sunday.

Clearly, much more drastic action is necessary to achieve a meaningful saving, although there is little point if it merely shifts the burden from one form of bought fuel to another.

I'll see how it goes....

exactly....if we don't use it one way we tend to use it another

i can stop usingmy electric kettle and use the old fashioned on on the top of the cooker but that will use my bottled gas

i could stand my cast iron one on the grate in the fire place but that will waste my coke that i have been so frugal with so that the freebie i got will last further into next winter

it is difficult to know what to do for the best i am afraid but i can still blame mr nanny

Don't beat yourself, or rather Mr Nanny, up too much. Your consumption is already very low and I suppose we need to look at our total energy consumption, not just electricity.
