I can't believe or understand quite how with the kids off school we managed a reduction mayhap it was that due to being very busy last week, we had a few takeaways and didn't otherwise excel on the good cooking front.

It doesn't seem to take much except a bit more awareness, to make a significant difference, 10%+ is significant IMHO

Any amount we can save is a good thing and there is always going to be times when consumption goes up from last week otherwise in a few months we wouldn't be using any.
Penny would it be possable to know the total kws used in the first week and then the seconed week so we can all see just what a difference a very small handful of familys can make overall, after all individual reductions are fantastic but isn't it the massive power to change and save we all have as a group that is the most impressive thing to come out of this?

I think it does require more than just awareness to make a significant difference. It seems to need a definite decision to stop using a particular appliance, or thinking through operating in a different way. All those who made the biggest savings seems to have made those kinds of changes. Though you're right, a 10% reduction is significant, and if we all did that over a sustained period of time, it would add up to something major.

The first week total was 3094, in the second week it was 2547 total saved 547 - that's if we take out the two scores that were significantly up (treating them as anomalies) the average % reduction as a group would be 18%. If this reduction was applied to the UK as a whole, it would equate to nearly 15% of the output of all conventional power stations!! We're trying to sort a press release at the moment, so more figures to follow

Last week we had good weather so a lot of our clothes were on the line. having two kids the washing machine is on most days, together with the tumble dryer.

They both seem to use large amounts of power, especially the tumble dryer, so we need to take steps to get it out of our lives.

Fantastic results all round. Well done everyone.

Doing the challenge certainly made me more aware of things like switching off extra lights and making more efficient use of the cooker. But as I said elsewhere, most of our savings came from switching the computer and peripherals off when not in use. They may go into sleep mode, but they are still using juice - a good ten units a week, at least. Quite scary when you multiply that up across the country.

I'm going to take another reading this Sunday too, just to see if I can keep this going.

I am too - hopefully it will be something that others can have a go at as and when they wish in the future, too.

Yes, dpack, getting rid of my car is the next big thing. That'll be a wrench.
Have switched off the fridge/freezer, but didn't have one until recently, so no withdrawal symptoms.
Manage also without a cooker/oven, steamers and such seem to do a good enough job.
Next project is a DIY solar water panel and a south facing window solar collector . (under trials at the mo).
And...looking for a free or not expensive woodburner. Pallet wood is available for the asking here.
I suppose individual mugs of drink ARe cheaper in the microwave. Will try it.
