We have a Cherry tree at the bottom of the garden which we always assumed was a bird cherry as the fruits were always tiny and hardly any flesh.Since we have cleared the bottom of weeds and tree seedlings,there is a lot more room for the cherry tree and last year and this,we have had quite nice sized fruit which is a bit tart but can be eaten raw(I made jam with some last year too).
Is it actually a white cherry tree?

Bloomin 'eck, might be a Merton Glory, supposed to be an excellent cherry. How old is it? (I'm planting 6 MG this winter, bred at the John Innes Institute it was) Just re-read, tart? Hmm, I don't know of any white sour/duke cherries, I'll have to look in me book if I can find it. Might be worth leaving them for another couple of days to see if they sweeten up.

Thanks tahir.They are always tart.
There used to be a big cherry tree in the garden which was killed by the hurrican in the 80's and my neighbour says this is from the seeds the birds dropped so could be 25 years old.We have been here 18 years and there has always been a cherry there but it was impossible to get to it for years because of the undergrowth.Next door has one aswell.
There used to be another beside it which had pink blossom but it was dying so got the chop.This one has white blossom.It's stones seem to take very easily as I am always finding little tiny seedlings from the birds leftovers.

forgot to say they are always lovely pinkish and yellow,hardly ever all pink.

OH says he doesn't think they are tart .They aren't as sweet as the cherries I've bought from the shops before.

They have sweetened up quite a lot over the last few days. Apparently our road was built on an old cherry orchard so could be a fancy variety after all Dont know if they grow true to form from stones but if anyone wants to try it we have loads of them going in the bin every day. The tree is about 18 feet high and next doors is about 21 feet.

If the tree came from a seed cherry it's unlikely to be a true cultivar, assuming cherries work the same was as apples. Doesn't stop it being a good fruit though: that's how Bramleys and Cox's came about.
