Have to agree with bodger here on the magpie front! They are the chav of the bird kingdom, loud, abusive,violent, well dressed with no job. I will also shoot as many as I can. but they are clever and sneaky, hunting magpies is a diificult task and much experimentation is needed to sus out how to bait them down etc, eggs are the best I have found, those dinner jacketed thugs cannot ressist a broken egg.

I think it would be wise to point out its Pest control and not pest obliteration

If you must shoot squirrels, then why not eat them?

A magpie does not 'slaughter' thrushes, it has to feed just like anything else, why should a songbird have more significance than a magpie or a sparrow?

Its not all about enjoyment though' otherwise I'd be shooting blue tits and thrushes and the like.
Its about doing some thing well, that I also consider to be usefull and beneficial.
If a magpie strays to close to me when I have a gun in my hand I shoot it . I also try to keep a Larson trap set for them and for every one I account for I think that I've done my little bit for the survival of the song birds in my area.
I like to think that my approach to what I do is a practical one.
Whilst it might not work for everyone,it works for me !

Larson traps should be made illegal. Every time i see one set, I dismantle it and release the captive magpie.

I visited a Cambs fruit fram yesterday, several pear trees had near enough all of their crop knocked off, lying on the floor, apparently it was crows. I've been told by numerous people now that unless I shoot crows/squirrel/rabbit I've no chance of getting a worthwhile crop of anything. And I've no intention of eating crow or squirrel.

If you was to see a magpie and its larger cousin pecking the eyes out of a new born lamb then maybe you will change your opinion. but as far as I am concearned a magpie is vermin and their numbers need to be controlled.

If that is the best you can do, then I could name a hundred things in nature that 'serve no particular purpose', that does not give me the right to go and kill blue tits or water voles does it?

A bird scarer? Yer 'aving a larf? There's a rookery one field away, 100s if not 1000s of the buggers, and EVERYONE* says how intelligent they are, and that very few deterrence strategies work.

*I've consulted widely, as gratuitous killing doesn't appeal to me even slightly, neither does the idea of people shooting on my land.

Come on, get real.

They're intelligent Silas, that means that if they know there's a likelihood that they're going to get shot then they'll probably go elsewhere.

Went to a walnut grove yesterday too, they shoot squirrels in the morning and evening whilst the nuts are ripening, maybe 100 in a year (over a similar area to mine) and they get bugger all damage. The surrounding area (like mine) has plenty of good squirrel habitat...
