Have you noticed that sometimes a post goes off topic but in a useful way?

Would it be worthwhile to split this posts up when the second )or third or fourth) topic becomes really useful?

Eg's I'm thinking of at the moment are the one started by Cab called Peas in Jack's Hints and Tips, and one of the Food Dye scare ones...in chat I think...which now has useful info on preserving!

I'm inclined not to interfere - most things will come up quite nicely in a search (esp if it were possible to have a search results option that shows individual posts rather than threads??) but just thought it was worth bringing up to see what anyone else thinks??

An alternative could be for the moderators of the threads that the info is relevant to, to post up a "some useful info in this conversation" post? Perhaps even have a sticky for adding these notices to?

I think that we need at some stage to trawl through some topics and turn them into articles. Other than that as a prime topic hijacker I think laissez faire is the best policy

I thought this process was a big point about what we are trying do do here.

Even without going off topic, if you want to find something out, you have to mine the forum via a search. Just because we know a useful thread exists on the 3rd page of a forum does not help anyone just visiting. Hence we gently encourage the writing of articles

If I understood you correctly that's always been policy hasn't it?

Whenever a user shows knowledge of a particular subject they are usually asked for an article. I still think it's worthwhile (if someone has the time) to trawl through some threads and formulate an article based on them.

I mean the switch to "gently" I thought the current procedure was to drag them into a dark alley and beat an article out of them

I thought you just sang at them, Tahir?

I found that quite scary in itself.

I think it could be the first downsizer campaign. See if Mrs Tahir will post.
