After having trouble with a P4 windows XP PC I started looking at a basic backup PC. Luckily we were offered an old Pentium 3 PC and I thought I'd give it a go.

It's a P3, 128MB RAM, with Windows 98SE. It's connected to broadband via a network card and router. For surfing the web it's absolutely fine and a good bit of recycling.

So, I wondered what everyone else uses and how do you find it?

At the moment I am mainly using an IBM Thinkpad 600E, while waiting for the iMac to arrive. It's adequate for browsing the interweb and this sort of thing. This thread sort of leads back to my contention that most people's PCs are grossly over-specced for what they actually use them for. Also, in contrast to most engineering/scientific solutions, Windows seems to be becoming less and less elegant and demand more and more resources as it develops, without gaining a great deal of useful functionality.

Actually I can make a small "downsizer" style claim. Whilst there are a lot of PC's here for various reasons. The upgrades are strictly when there is a legit need. So the most powerful processor is a mere 2500mhz.

We don't change our kit unless we need to, our works network is NT 4.0 with Citrix Metaframe so most users just have Wyse terminals that'll never need upgrading, our linux server is a PII can't remember what speed. I built my own server at home and the PC I use at work, both with 1.3 Ghz Pentium's they do fine for me.

I think that once PC's hit the 600mhz mark, then for practical working purposes they got fast enough. I have a sony 600mhz notebook, and for most purposes it does fine.

Unless you are playing games/rendering etc, It is only windows bloatware that can contrive to make PC's of this sort of spec too slow.

I have a tecra A2 laptop in work which is way over spec for anything I use it for,

At home we have an old tosh laptop about 233mhz with an external modem. The kids can play on it and it surfs fine.

Well if you want the specs....

Actually it's a 9'3" traditional nose rider, although I've traded up for a Guts 9,2" progressive with fcs, hard rails and a pin tail.

I also have a 10ft Tim mellors single fin, square tail noserider, great for long slow turns in the old style.

See, even surf dudes can get techy.
