Does anyone use 2wd quad bikes to keep the pasture in good shape on their smallholding? I am going to have a google because I know nothing about them but have been offered one "cheap". I need something to top, harrow and roll (horses on land - yes I think they should be doing it but...) Just wondered whether it would be worth the investment or should I continue to ask the local farmer and then of course miss the best time to do these jobs.

the pasture is only around 4 acres and pretty level

The 2wd bikes are a bit light for pulling implements. You'd be better off with a 4wd bike for that, and even then you'd probably be struggling unless the gear is very light indeed. But, if the bike's ludicrously cheap, then I'd be tempted. Has the person selling it ever used it for pulling harrows, rollers or grasscutters around?
If the land is firm and well-drained, what about using a 4x4 car - it's got to have more oomph than the quad.

What a good idea - and i was thinking that if the quad got stuck we could pull it out with the landrover duh Many thanks

Dont forget that self powered kits costs loads more than standard equipment. Check out the cost of a standard tractor & all the kit you need against a quad & self powered equipment. From what I see they dont often come up second hand, when they do they cost loads & new they are pure extortion.

PS we do use a 2wd quad to do spraying, collecting fire wood, carying sick animals, draging stuff, rounding up animals, moving fencing and loads more.

we have a Polaris quad ... its happy pulling a rotary mower ... the only thing is cost , we were lucky and got one for £200 from a farm sale, but they do retail as new for £2000 +
you can get a harrow for about £100 new , same for a roller....
but check what make the bike is and just look it up on the net ..you should be able to find out the max weight/power

found this page https://www.oaksmeadow.co.uk/default.asp
there are lots of extras for the bike on there

Very handy - thank you. I had no idea about costs for things like harrows - and am very tempted to go to various local farms and just ask if I can salvage some of the bits that they leave slowly rusting into the ground. I have to look at how I could attach anything to a landrover so any links will help. Topping - I would probably have to ask the local farmer as usual. Being able to harrow and roll myself would be very useful

Get a series 3 Landrover with a PTO, will run a topper no problem (series landies have a big hole in the back of the chassis for a pto)
