When I went to inspect my sheep this morning I found one of the older Norfolk Horn in-lamb ewes frothing/foaming at the nose and mouth.

Anyone know what this might be?

I looked in the book and the closest thing I could find was botulism!!.....although the indication was that this comes about by livestock being underfed, which is not the case with mine.

Thoughts appreciated!

Worrying - could be a pastuerella infection. My inclination would be to give her a 2ml of Pen & Strep pronto.
How has she fared over the day?

Hi,

Not much change really, although she's a little on the slow side and lagging behind the rest.

I have run out of antibiotics and have to wait until the morning before I can get something from the vets unfortunately, so hope she's ok through the night.

Will keep you informed.

Thanks

Could it be something she's eaten?

Would it be wise to seperate her? Not that I know a thing about sheep.

Is she bloated at all? And what are they being fed on? Like Stacey suggests, I'd suspect gastro-intestinal problems, unless there are other symptoms to suggest something bacterial?

Well she's still alive (and was separated yesterday from the rest of the flock). Still foaming at the mouth and through the nose. I can't think of anything that she may have eaten as there isn't really much else to eat apart from grass - but you never know. The thought had crossed my mind.

They're fed on top quality hay and a ration of ewe and lamb nuts at the moment, so pretty well.

I'm off to the vets a little later for some antibiotics.

Let us know what the vet says. Maybe too well was my thinking, though it's unusual at this time of year, with so little green matter about. I take it there's been no changes to the diet. Can't be so serious if she's still living

Most likely cause is pneumonia. That usually causes a degree of "bubble blowing". and you would expect her to be slow and lag behind the others. If its not too acute, it can clear up on its own, but probably best to get a suitable antibiotic from the vet.
