|
the pieces are carved out of rough ,100,000 year old mamoth ivory, shaped then polished to a mirror finish, then the scrimshaw can be added, cut into the surface with a scalpal blade.once the picture is done whale fat tallow soot is rubbed into the surface to show up the scrimshaw, finaly bees wax is used to seal it in.
the top piece is 4cm long,so the detail is very small.
the top picture is of a mammoth and the tundra, the larger harpoon shape piece, has a fissure in the surface so i used it in the picture,i did an indian scene of a hunter returning from the hunt in the snow with his dog,in the encampment is a child playing with his bow, fish smoking on a rack,a skin streatched on a rack, and the evening meal being cooked.in the background a sun setting behind the firs.
some times the ivory has the most beutiful grain, and in my view superior to plain cream elephant ivory, which is of course now protected under international law.
