I have just read the article on growing your own sweet spuds and starting them off in a jam jar of water to start the slips. Is there a right way up? My sweet potato has a distinctly rounded end and a distinctly pointy end... It is currently round end down (in the water, suspended by tooth picks technique) Advice needed please!

I put mine round end in the water, the pointy end is I think where the tuber was attached to the vine

I don't believe there is a right way up but all mine are growing with rounded sides pointed downwards.

Since I watched Gardeners World 2 weeks ago I transferred mine to compost. They're on thier sides now, and I have one slip showing through. Whem do I remove it and do I pot it up? Or cut it in half and root 2 pieces? In water or compost?

It took one of mine 10 days, there was another eye on the same tuber . The other 3 were not showing any signs of doing anything. They're all in compost now and the largest sprout has now come through the compost. Sorry I cant be more informative, its my first time too.

10 days is quick, mine have been in water longer and are only just starting to shoot.

I was given some this weekend by a lady on the allotment - she thrust them into my hand and just told me to bury them So I did. They are definately buried, (a few sprouts) so I just planted them sprouts up and am awaiting the result now.

Are you leaving them in as they are Fallscrape. Or do you have to separate the slips and plant them seperatly? Mine are (well one) has got two shoots, and not sure where to go from here. Yes 10 days was quick Leonie, but I think that one had got eyes ready to go. The others are not any signs at all yet.

Slips? I just took each one with a sprouting bit on it, dumped it in a hole, and buried it. I go for the amateur 'I didn't know what to do with it so I just threw it in a hole and hoped' approach. Pretty much all my experience in gardening goes like that, I learn as I don't grow. Fingers crossed lol

I wonder why slips are recommended? Afterall spuds and jer. artichokes are both propagated by planting the tuber.... I think yours should do just fine Tim.... However this thread reminds me I ordered some sweet potato slips a while back.... and I don't have somewhere prepared for them. At least I did, but I planted other stuff there at the weekend. Duh! Back to digging!

Yay thanks Fallscrape and Sally, I forget the commercial way then, have you put them on the open allotment as well? Mines being mollycoddled in the propagater, but more sprouts are showing through.
