302 plants by my calcs. Earlibird, Earligold, Seville and a few popcorn (blue, white and yellow) and Bloody Butcher (for flour)

I didn't protect them against rabbits, looked like they were all still there this morning.

I don't think waiting improves soil. I'm fairly sure you have to do stuff to it.

I think mine are Swift. Stuffed a few in the propagator last week, but not as early as I ought to have!

If I cover some with fleece, will they be eariler. I reckon it's still windy here enough to get pollinated.

I wish mine were

Still waiting for our turn to come around with the 'communal' rotavator ...

Only kidding. A very good friend of ours has kindly offered the use of his rotavator but it is a biggie and I need to collect it with the trailer. Trouble is the brakes are shot on our van so I gotta find Japanese brake pads in France. The veggies are queuing up to go in the ground (including the 200 different varieties of sweetcorn you sent me mate)

On that note I am gonna go and have a try with my trusty fork and spade.

Ours went in last week, two varieties about 100 seeds.

Last year my brother had some success with his corn, bean, squash matrix. This year I am trying the same. I have planted some runner beans with every corn and instead of a squash a pumpkin.

I am hoping that the beans will row up the corn, although I imagine I will have to steak them out a bit at first as they grow at differing rates and the pumping should offer some ground cover to keep the weeds at bay.

I have some coming up in the cold frame ( an old display chiller cabinet ) and planted 80 seeds out this morning just before the rain started again.

They are either waiting for them to get a bit bigger or too scared of the badgers...

Wind chill factor of about -40 today. No way my sweetcorn is leaving my nice warm windowsill!
