I'm new to this growing from seed business, but encouraged by an earlier thread on here I ordered a bunch of chili seeds from Simpsons.

The packets stated that they needed 85 deg f, so not having a propagator I've put the seed trays in the airing cupboard (wife was out at the time ). This was only 5 days ago, so it's early days yet, but there's nothing showing yet, I was just wondering whether they will need light as well for germination?

Thanks,

Aled

They'll germinate without light, but check them daily, you don't want to keep them dark for too long.

Chillis can take up to 3 weeks (maybe more...most of mine were showing within 10 days this time) to germinate.

Don't think the light is essential - I assume you have covered them with compost after all. Just keep watching and bring them out into the light as soon as you see movement.

I sowed two types on Saturday - one is just germinating, and the other is doing nothing as yet. I wouldn't worry yet.

3 weeks - that's a long time without an airing cupboard!

Thanks for the advice

I've successfully grown chillies for the past 4 years, all sorts of varieties, and I've never gone for the dark side...always grown them successfully (from the seeds taken from chillies I've bought in the supermarket!!) on my bedroom windowsill which gets plenty of sun for most of the day.

This year, I'm growing more than ever, with 10 birdseye, 10 'Gambian' (don't know what they are, they were chunky general chillies from my local shop that were really tasty...country of origin, 'Gambia'...obviously) and 10 Bolivian purple (which I bought as seed, cos they look really cool, small and all different colours, including purple).

They are all germinating now, thought suprisingly, the ones I bought as seed are about two weeks behind the others, which are now strong looking little guys, and some have even been potted on.

Maybe if I go for the whole starting them off in the dark, they'll be even better! Might give it a try with some next year
