I guess mine would be massive too, but then I think it handy to keep emails indefinitely.

But what I have done is to create loads of folders in thunderbird and set up filtering rules to sort emails as they come in.

So there might be a hack of a lot of email stored, but it does stay quite tidy

Things with attachments (inc graphics) may be a large part of the problem.

Depending on your mail client, you may be able to display in size order so you can make the maximum impact with the minimum effort/time.
But having emptied the mail Trash, you'll probably have to consolidate/compact your mail files to reduce the storage space reserved for the mail file.

Reducing its size makes it quicker/easier to backup, may make the mail program more nippy, but otherwise there may even be advantages in reusing particular chunks of disk (given over to mail, but with freespace).
If you defrag the disk, you'd be sure of having your mail files close together on the disk, and avoid the overhead of the OS allocating more space to expand the file - that is, until the next time your squirrel instincts get the better of you!

My Thunderbird email archive goes back seven years... fairly in the habit of moving stuff (from inbox and sent) fairly regularly.

With regards to attachments, I occasionally forward receive items to myself so I can keep the email but without the attachment.
