[quote="Bugs"]Madman, did you ever use them for beer?quote]

No, but my mother used them to fill pillows. Apparently it's a cure for insomnia.

The young shoots are very tasty as a green veg.

The main bitter hop is Fuggles (at one point accounting for 75% of the hops grown in the UK) then Goldings and others such as Target & Northdown. We have Fuggles and two types of Goldings.

If anyone has a favourite beer then I may be able to track down what hops are used from a good little book I have. Just ask.

That's a complex one, it has Bramling Cross, Challenger, Fuggles and Goldings whole hops. No mention of the amounts.

Well here are my babies. They are quite good chunky plants so I've potted them up in big deep pots while I decide where to put them.

Can you propagate hops?

Also, what's in London pride. I know he won't drink it, but if I buy the right one, I might not get so much of telling off for buying another plant (he eats 'em though, no complaint!)

Some places you cannot get rid of them! If they are happy they'll spread via roots that form shots. I'm not sure of the exact word for it but they just seem to form a big clump and spread all over the place.

They can also grow from seeds if the hops are left on long enough.

I hope to take some plants, via rooted shoots, from ours when they get established.

London Pride has Challenger, Nothdown and Target hops.

They are very easy to propagate from root cuttings.

And I think I've just spotted our first victim for the proceeds .... so you'll be needing a new garden for the 2006 growing season, WW!

I wasn't angling for some! I've got one of those very long thin gardens, that seems to be all fence, and hops are nice and green (I don't like the golden one as much) and would cover them up nicely, but I'd need about 50 plants. I was going to buy a couple, and divide them, or take cuttings.

it sounds like it will survive my garden maintenaince programme nicely, and it shouldn't be a problem getting it past the finance department!

At the moment, I'd be happy with a functional kitchen (should be finished today, where have I heard that before!?) but we may have a new garden next year, if the kitchen gets finished, and the estate agents pull their fingers out!

If you do want to get some now, I would recommend Deacon's, very friendly service and the plants seem good quality. But if you don't get around to it, any spares can certainly be sent in your direction if you want it!

They do make something close to 20ft of growth though, so you might not need as many as you fear

I've just bought some hop seeds from ebay - which hopefully will germinate nicely

Bugger - I've only got eight foot fences! I wonder if I can get them to grow 20 horizontal feet!

i have wild hops growing on the hedge in my garden that look suspiciously like the cutting s in the photo (or perhaps they all do ?)

they seem to grow like mad and all i did was pull a bit out of the ground when i was trying to clear some space and stuck it in a pot...

it has survived the winter and now in the greenhouse putting on half an inch a day from the look of it...............

i suppose i could use it for brewing if i wanted?

mainly i just like the look of the plant and it makes so much growth in a season that it covers most anything very quickly

bit like that russian vine which i would never grow
