Hi Can anyone tell me how to sex young chicks. I here it can be done from the flight feathers. I have just hatched 8 whole new chicks for the first time.
Cheers

Congratulations on the new arrivals! What kind have you got?

If I remember rightly, the flight feathers of the cockerels will be slightly more pointy than those of the girls, but it isn't an exact science - the person who told me that managed to sell me an unwanted cockerel and two girls, rather than the three layers that I wanted.

Your just-hatched chicks won't have any flight feathers yet, of course, so it's not going to help you much now! It is also possible to tell the sex by looking at the vent, but this is a very skilled job and I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it.

I find that watching the chicks is as good a way as any. The cockerels will tend to be more upright in their stance - if you move your hand over them, they will often raise their heads to watch it, while the hens will crouch down - even at a very young age. But again, I wouldn't rely on it as a method.
