Well in the specialist book trade things are not too bad we should, barring disaster finish between 5-7% up on last year and last year was very good.

just checked my books and we are up on last year but we have 4 more outlets so its a good job we are got quite a lot of orders starting from 1st dec looking to the 22nd when im having 2 weeks off the first time now i work for myself in 9 years at christmas/newyear

So is it getting any better for everyone? We seem to have really jumped up a gear in the last few days. I'm tired already, so goodness only knows what I'll be like come the 21st

Can you make taster packs? Tiny bottles, with a mouthful only? Almost give them away, or, a 50ml bottle taped as a freebie on the side of one of the ones he does sell?

I'm hoping that if people taste the other ones, they will ask him to start stocking them, so there will be a bigger order next time. Or indeed tomorrow. And he pays on delivery.

On the other hand, if I sell direct to the customer, I make more of a margin...

Small taster bottles are very expensive. And corking would be a problem. I don't have a screwtop machine.

I had thought of doing half bottles as taster pairs, but they are also very expensive (and not available in the colour/.shape combination of the full size)

Yes,. I'll have more or less the complete range of bottles open for tasting at the FM, so will just go over with the whole lot to the tasting at the wine merchant. I'm wondering what I do when someone says they want to buy a wine he doesn't stock. 'See me in the car park after' ?

Do a deal with him there, hard and fast.

'This lady wants to buy a couple of bottles of my nettle stout. It's not your usual stock, so how about we process it anyway, I'll let you have the stock, and give you a finders fee of, say, £2 a bottle (or whatever figure makes sense)?'

He can say no, take zero money, look a wally in front of the customer, and you get carte blanche to deal with her outside his supply chain, or he can say, yep, you've done all the work, where's my two quid?
