I want to sketch out a big project (hey its 2nd January

). I have in mind a software equivalent of a big wall with post it notes that i can write and move and link together. I'd also be able to zoom out to see the whole thing and then zoom in to a particular bit in more detail. Apart from that I don't need anything fancy.

Any suggestions for what the best thing might be for this would be gratefully received.

For the early stages, while you're still thinking about things: post-it notes, a pen (well, many pens with different colours), and a wall. Lets you get on with the thinking and not the writing and positioning. Once you're happy you've got most of the stuff down, then transfer it to the computer on a package someone will recommend.

Er windows can do that already. Use outlook (not express) & post notes on desktop. you can then use the acccess module to use a magnifying glass. Justme

Thanks Justme. That means my "wall" will be my desktop. If i wanted to move it onto a laptop & then back to my PC can I move the whole document? Sorry- i'm a bit self taught.

Ok had a look. If you "forward" it to another email account you can send it to another pc. Might not be as simple as moving a file around but at least you will have two copies of every thing. We use a similar system between the laptop & desk top for outlook calender entries as we invite the other one so we always have two full copies of what we are up to. Either one can be used to create, view or change the bookings.

There are many pieces of software that can be used for 'mind mapping' or 'visual outlining' ... I don't know of windoze shareware, but such things exist for the Mac. However... https://www.microsoft.com/education/analyticalvisio.mspx

I use FreeMind for that sort of thing. I'm on a Mac but it should work on a Microshaft machine too as it's in Java (whatever that means). It's open source, so free.

Thanks Dougal will look at that too. I suppose i was looking for an equivalent of Google Sketchup but can't find anything. I even thought of using an A1 canvas in photoshop and just writing on that- but it seems a bit unwieldy. Cheers

Do you use google personalised home pages?

Google has a system where you log in (from anywhere) and the home page with their search box at the top can contain gadgets which can do a wide variety of things from rssfeeds from news sites and blogs to games and email readers etc

One of the gadgets is called

You can also have different tabs like in firefox for different content

Stickies and is from these chaps

if you put the word Stickies into the gadget search engine you should find them

This allows you to effectively have a wall of post it notes on a webpage

You can have as many as you want and you would be able to see it anywhere

I am sure there is other functionality in the personalised google stuff you might also find useful

Cheers. had a look and it restricts me to 50 Stickies. I'm going to go with the simple one but thanks for all of your help!

Have you tried Microsoft OneNote? https://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote/FX100487701033.aspx Can I ask people not to deride vendors such as Microsoft with terms like Windoze and Microshaft. I just find it, well, childish really to be honest. I could use iMuck or Linsux if i had a bias against either of these vendors. Just not cricket, what!

Yeah, you could. It wouldn't bother me.

I'd venture that Micro$oft, Microshaft, and Windoze are common parlance.

If I see obvious personal bias in an article or post such as someone using M$ or Windoze (as these seem to be particularly common), then I can't take their post or their opinion seriously. If people want to be heard for their intelligent and balanced view point then using these types of phrases is self defeating. I'm just trying to raise the bar a little.

Suppose that the obvious personal bias is the result of thirty years experience using several quite different operating systems from several suppliers, (not to mention the one I co-wrote) sometimes working where "security" is a major requirement and in your old age you look back and think "poor buggers, they think that computers are supposed to be like this!", as in unreliable, germ ridden, resource consuming and as secure as an open front door with the lights left on and your wallet on the doormat?

Just supposing

Personally, I try not to use words like "Windoze" 'cos its childish (IMHO), I just think to myself "poor ignorant beggars!"
