I have one hazel tree and for the last two years it has produced more nuts than I could use.

Not this year though, not since I learned how to make chocolates I can't wait for the nuts to come this year.

Looking at Patrick Whitfield's Forest Garden book, he reckoned that it depended upon the distance between the hazel and big trees:

50m you get some nuts;

200m you get all the nuts

There's a cricket pitch at the back of the garden and the boundaries are full of trees.

Martin Crawford (Mr Agroforestry) is a really nice guy and is extremely knowledgable on nuts I'm definitely going to be growing lots of unusual nut varieties (including pine nuts) when I get my land and I reckon most will be from Martin. He's trialled all the varieties he sells so should be able to advise you pretty well.

i've always wondered about pine nuts... do they come out of pinecones? if so which variety of pine? i'd love to grow some they are so nice lightly toasted but they cost the moon!

i like the sound of that bladdernut tree mentioned earlier as i love pistachio's (another nut that costs the moon ) though i do wonder about the name...does anyone know if they have a diuretic effect?

There are several species of pine's that produce nuts, and they are in the cones, agroforstry sell them.

I've bought my nephew a bladder nut tree (planted Feb) sounds excellent, I've not heard of a diuretic effect but you could ask Martin.

I believe it's the stone pine (I had to look up the scientific name, which is Pinus pinea)...but I read that in a magazine (WFI) so I don't suppose it counts...

Should I put my glossary entry on Pine Nuts under Wild Foods or Grow Your Own, and should the heading be Stone Pine or Pine Nuts???

Why not put pine nuts in grow your own, and Stone Pine in wild food?

thanks for the info about the pine nuts, i'll have to look into that!

i was just curious about the bladdernut as many a plant gets it's common name for fairly obvious reasons. dandelions have a well known diuretic effect, so much so that the french translation for dandelion is 'pi$$ the bed'!!!
