I finished mine, but alas have no way of showing it 'cos I don't have a camera. It was fun to do though.

HomeonTheHill,

what sort of yarn is that? They only had two colours in the store here - ecru or white. Can you use any cotton? Yours looks so pretty! I think it would make a lovely gift with some soap or bubbley bath.

Well done everyone, it's been fun to try something new.

Finally found the lead, so here are my offerings, along with the yarn label. As I say, both from the one ball which was 50p in a sale. 100% cotton.

All the dishcloths look great! I haven't got around to starting one yet as I've been feeling a bit bleurgh, although I did manage a couple of lines on a hat I'm knitting for ds2. I think I might dig out the cotton I have and cast one on today (once I've cleaned the bathroom, got the ironing out of the way, etc. - I've let things mount up a bit over the past couple of days).

They are really ovely Mochyn. I'm off work today with whatever the latest plague doing the rounds is, so I might start another cloth as suitable poorly knitting.

The rectablge was a kind of sampler of stitches to use up the rest of the ball. Unlike Home on the Hill I started in the centre and worked outwards for the round one, increasing the number of stitches in each plain row.

The key with getting cheap yarn is to keep your eyes open. Also, if people know you knnit they sometimes offer odds and ends for free.

Charity shops sometimes have a basket of yarn knocking about and that can be a good source of cheap yarn.

Aaah - you seem to believe I know what I'm doing!

For the first one, which was white/cream, and the second (green) one I just used some 100% cotton yarn that I had left over from another project. The white/cream has been boil washed and tumble dried and has survived. I don't know how the green will stand up to this treatment cos I can't finish it 'til I get some more yarn. I think the colour might run.
I assumed that any cotton yarn was suitable - but I may well be wrong! I decided to go ahead anyway 'cos I'm a novice knitter and wanted to learn the yarn over thingy and try the strange circle style. It was only waste yarn so if it all goes wrong, I'll compost it!

I wouldnd't buy 'new' (full price) yarn for dishcloths. Recycled from an old garment or bought in a charity shop/sale seems the thing for me. I also wouldn't worry about using more than one colour in one cloth: they're only for wahing up with! As long as they're the same thickness , of course. I'd also say that 100% cotton seems preferable too: any man-made fibre in their could give problems with a hot wash, and wouldn't compost. Of course, if it was a cotton/silk or cotton/linen mix that wouldn't be a problem...

Looks good

I've almost finished Mrs Moo's face cloth - made from some cotton I've had lying about for ages (on 2.75mm - it's been a while since I've used such small needles, I've started and frogged a few projects with the stuff) - pink with hearts on but she's really pleased with it so far.

Major set back the dog got hold of the ball of yarn and has given the whole project a good chewing
I´m tempted just to cut it and chuck it and buy another ball.

Btw is it normal to find a knot in a new ball of yarn?
