I thought Europe was grossly short of all proteins.

You don't think that, you've heard that, there's a difference.

So why does Europe import millions of tonnes of Soya from Brazil?

Nope, because when we produce something well, the value drops through the floor & we have to find something less easy to produce so that it will be valued more.

So you don't belive we have an unsustainably high population for nature alone to nourish?

Because for a long time it's been cheaper than looking at more sustainable ways.

I believe we (if you are talking about the UK) has a net over nourishment of our population, not well nourished, but over supplied by our decadent tastes.

Britain is crap at trying to be autarkic, but Europe on the other hand, and France and Germany in particular, specialise in trying to be self sufficient. There is no way they would be importing Soya, if they could produce enough home grown protein for themselves.

Ever been to France or Germany? Have a look in their supermarkets, then tell me they don't import protein. Sometimes, CKR, I wonder if you're on the same planet as everyone else.

I think you are way off the mark if you think Britain could nourish 60,000,000 people sustainably.

Hello, that is what I'm saying. They do import protein, because they have to.

It is a rather naive view you have, a bit like saying Britain must import all the fuel we do. It has naff all to do with need & everything to do with money & desire.

A cheap, even free alternative to soya in the UK is runner beans, dried on the pod.
According to 'Diet for a small Planet', legumes combined with grains, rice or milk, makes for a complete protein.
I have been living off them this winter, soaked overnight, then slow cooked, can even be frozen for later.
For soups and casseroles mainly but could perhaps make a sort of humus...Dehlia tonight on tv.

Don't get me wrong Rob. I would love for Britain to be self sufficient in our needs of food, fuel and water. Everything we can do to reach this aim would be fantastic.
