I've heard that osCommerce isn't as good as it perhaps ought to be, and that Zen Cart is much better.

I don't have experience of either as yet.

Anyone have any comments on these, or other PHP/MySQL based cart frameworks? Support for PayPal integration is highly desirable but not essential.

I only have experience of Zen Cart, I'd recommend it, but as I say, it's the only one I have any real experience of. I did have a play with a few before deciding on Zen Cart originally though, if that helps

oscommerce seems somewhat dead in the water. A stable solution maybe, but not one for current development work.

My OSCommerce site is as you have indicated looking a bit tired now. I've been looking at this https://www.magentocommerce.com/

Any experience of it. It looks ahem, as Stacey might say Lush.

We're writing our own eCommerce platform integrated into our CMS using XML as the data store but integrating with external SQL servers (any type that support remote connection strings). We're building in PayPal, ProtX, Secure Trading and HSBC for starters then moving onto other payment providers in the future or as required. This is under closed development at the moment but we're going to open it up for commercial development and possibly even OpenSource but that will be some time to come. First site will be launched begining May for trade customers of a client.

Edit: And it's multilingual - well the framework is. But it's no good for you as it's written in asp.NET.

Ditto! Ours already exists though! Perhaps not as sophisticated as yours is intended to be though. Sounds interesting, XML and XSL are perfect for this type of application.

Seems everyone wants their own cart software I shall have specialised requirements when I deploy my own website later this summer; none of the carts I've looked at are right for the job so I shall more than likely create my own.

We've pleasently avoided the need to use XSL and XSD (XML purist's are aghast). Performance is excellent from XML and for the base CMS avoids the need to make external calls to db's thus making the CMS more easily portable.

I think I have hijacked this thread.

No not at all, no more than I have! Whats the advantage in writing your own cart as opposed to taking an off the shelf open source version? I don't have the ability so its not an issue for me!

In our case we're developing site for a wide range of clients each with their own needs. An off-the-shelf eCommerce solution is quick and easy and if OpenSource allows you to modify to fit your own needs. However, an updated version may require re-integration of your own code which may not work if the framework changes and you always reliant on someone elses code.

The down side is that your own solution won't have gone through the same security testing or the code may not be as high a quality as it should be or you may spend ages writing all the tedious code that any system requires.
