I've managed to get an old TV working by taking the back off and giving a good vacuum out. If the computer is in a dusty place it might be worth trying to clean it, although if the computer overheats it could cost a bit more than a fan.

Are you saying my office is dusty Proberbly could be because the towere seems to attract the dust like nothing else. Perhaps I'll get the side off and try that first. How long should a fan last, if the computer is used every day.

I have no idea, altough I've never known one go and I've worked with computers for 15 years or so. I've seen screens go, the odd hard disk crash, I've broken a keyboard and when I used to play games I broke several joysticks. As my PC is in the same room as an open fire we get a lot of dust.

I'll try the hoovering trick first then. Hope it will work, it is a dyson after all

I look forward to the 'how to I get a RAM chip out of a Dyson' post tomorrow.

I'm sure you will, but it's always worth backing stuff up (especially anything urgent) and be careful of the chips.

The one thing I often do when adding something to my PC is nudging the Disk cables (the large ribbons) and then the PC doesn't boot and I think B***er, but a quick check of the cables and it all works. Not sure if anyone else has any tips?

Give it a good blast of compressed air to get all the dust out of the case. Careful with oiling the fan as it can leak through and spray across the inside of the case. Take the case of and with a pencil stop each fan in turn for no longer than a few seconds. That will find the noise one

Now I am scared, I didn't even know there was more than one. Do you get compressed air in cans?

One near the power supply. Some have one on or very near the large CPU. I think they can also be near the graphics card in a hi-spec PC and they may also stick one whereever they fancy!

One or Two in the powersupply (one blows out the back and the other may suck air from the inside of the case), one over the processor (blasts hot air up), one over the graphics card (blasts hot air up), maybe one on the front of the case (sucks air in).

Fans are cheap enugh to replace - you should be able to get one for about a fiver - and they simply plug into one of the many power leads that dangle inside most boxes.
Do replace a faulty one, though, as the processor doesn't like overheating. I nearly fried the PC here after turning on the central heating (rousing hurrah!) and forgetting that the PC had been whirring away for two months on what is virtually a building site. There was so much dust and crap clogging the vents that the inside temprature crept up and the machine froze.
As a precaution, if you think your machine's running too hot, you can underclock the processor via the BIOS (Press Delete when the machine starts booting up) - with more modern processors this can make a big difference to the temperature.
