Is AVG Free as good as I need to renew Norton AV and thought I might save myself £30?

I personally think AVG is far superior to Norton and have changed all my family over to it

In my limited experience Norton is a PITA, Grisoft AVG has always worked fine for me.

Norton is the biggest piece of rubbish I've ever used, I hate it.

There seems to be a consensus emerging here.

Hate to buck the trend here, but I've always used Norton (Anti virus, Utilities, Firewall etc, and I am happy with it. But then again I've not tried other Anti Virus programs

I think the updates for AVG are not as often as Norton but then it is free!

PC-Cillin user and very satisfied customer here. I get updates as soon as they are released and have never had a virus problem AFAIK. Norton and McAfee both disagreed with some software that I use for my work - PC-Cillin never has. After the initial purchase, annual fee is in the region of £18, which is a small price for the peace of mind IMO.

I'm not using it anymore, but they had increased the frequency of the updates IIRC.

I've just started using AVG free, does it run out after I year or can you keep on using it?

from what I have seen norton is a big fat pain in the butt. I had used AVG for years but after the last version came out I started having problems with it so had to chuck it. I now use another free one called avast and it seems to be fine as well

No, you just keep using it. I believe you can even schedule an update with the latest version of AVG Free, so it'll trot off by itself and pick them up. Requests for updates are lower priority than the paid users, though, so I personally found it worth paying the 23 quid (for 2 years) for the full version. There's a comparison of the programs on the Grisoft site.

Wombat, I've never had a problem with it and I think it's far superior to Norton. I agree that Avast is good too. Others with good reports are Panda, a2 (a-squared) and Kaspersky.

I use AVG and AVAST (both free) and between them they seem to keep me virus free. AVG is the less intrusive of the two and is more user friendly when carrying out scans (AVAST has a terrible interface) but AVAST has identified trojans trying to attack, and stopped them in their tracks, on a few occasions so for the meantime I'll keep both going.
