I see where you are coming from and dont take this the wrong way - but, the reason the majority of estate rifles in scotland are 270 is because of the very flat trajectory and tremendous stopping power, with factory ammo. This allows confidence in use by paying guests who are not always marksmen.
Zeroed at 100, it can be used out to 250 no problem. Stalkers usually use 243 , neck shots for all their stalking. Beware the man with one gun.

Given the choice between clean kill or having the least spoilage I'd go for the kill, but if you can have a clean kill with less spoilage that would be better.

I thought neck shots were frowned upon as there is very little margin for error and a large chance of wounding?

To answer your first question, there is little damage to the meat because of the very high velocity and narrowness of the animal's body. The bullet doesn't deform that much but still imparts massive shock.

Secondly, the heart / lung shot is considered the most humane aiming point by all organisations. The neck shot is very risky for a number of reasons. To knock the animal down on the spot you must cut the spinal chord, which is a little over a cm wide. Not an easy shot even for a marksman, who has to take his shot when it's presented (this is not bench rest shooting). I would challenge anyone to consistantly put 10 rounds into a 4 inch circle at 70 yards shooting from the shoulder.

As you say the margin for error is large and many deer have escaped horribly injured to die later.

If you are successful with the neck shot, when approached the animal will be alive and conscious. The animal will be terrified and paralysed from the neck down, it will then have to be dispatched with another shot.

It would depend on the bullet used, as to what damage is done. A 270 is very much overkill.

I remember someone mentioning about a Tikka T3 s/steel synthetic rifle a while back. Well I can't help, but the Dec 2 S/Times has a review of the sister rifle the Sako 75 Stainless Synthetic rifle in the .270 WSM calibre if anyone interested. It doesn't say too much but there are no negative comments and they love the rifle.

The Tikka thread was mine. Trouble is I can't get one (have waiting months and using a Mannlicher Luxus in the meantime). Funny thing is, GMK can't supply the T3 in .270 but have a Sako 75 (in .270) in stock - a snip at £1200. I should write an article on their trading methods!

I got their brochure for a rimfire but they don't do left handers. Good read though. I would be interested in an article of running in a new rifle. Is it more necessary in a s/steel?

You're right! Safer shooting should be encouraged - thats why I started the ballistics thread. The idea was, if you can't select the right tools, how can you do the job safely and humanely. There is so little info out there for the beginner! Post on the thread - like I said, if I don't know, I'll find out!

Ansultz make left handed , and it rumoured also that the CZ's(bruno) are also going into the left handed market . Savage also do rimfire and centrefire in left handed stocks and action.

Thanks Legion, ideally LH bolt action and an ambi stock as I'm LH and will use it most and my OH is righthanded. I will try and track down some more info.

I am a leftie, so all my guns , with the exception of a 22 thats not. Latest purchase was a ruger 10/22 custom jobbie - nice!!
