As there will probably be just the 2 of us for the festivities this year I don't think I'll do a rfc. What to make instead though?

I always make Christmas cake(s) at half term too - then feed with spirit of your choice (whisky in this house) every weekend until Christmas. It doesn't matter if I don't get round to decorating it before Christmas as everyone is too stuffed on Christmas Day to eat it anyhow. We generally eat it with tea in the garden when pruning the fruit trees on cold January days - excellent

So yes, I'll be joining in....Carrie

Mmmm! Christmas cake with added whisky-a fine idea Carrie. Now both my posts have been to do with drinking, I will be getting a reputation before I even start
Has anyone got an ultimate Christmas cake recipe to share? I feel inspired to try something different from my usual Dairy Book of Home Cookery one.

On reflection Kirsty, I think Jonnyboy's seems to suit you better

I'm definitely up for making a cake or two. I did find this on the Lakeland website: Multi-size pan.

I'm a bit odd in that I don't like big chunks of fruit in my cakes, I like more cake than 'bits', but I love the flavour. Two years ago, I adapted a friend's renown boiled fruit cake recipe, and took the stick blender to the boiled mix of fruit, butter and milk. Then I added a touch of molasses with the rest of the ingredients, then fed it brandy once baked.

The resulting cake didn't last more than a day or two once it was unwrapped.

I'm going to have to make a proper one though, this year, as my 9 year old loves marzipan and real fruit cake.

I've decided: neither of us particularly like rfc so I'm going to do a panetone, a stollen and something else: yule log, perhaps.

I'll probably be making ours at half term as well - In the past Mum and I took turns to make the cake - looks like its just up to me now - I do miss being able to talk to her about stuff like this.... anyway moving on -

Have we got a hamper thread for this year yet - I'll check or start one because I think I might make some little ones as well as part of the present hampers

I made my first one for 3 of us last year, dried fruit cost an arm and a leg, and it cost me nearly 70 euros(gulp) it was very nice tho! I,m looking for a less fruit more cake kind of thing, as hubby has suggested we contact Harrods and have them hand deliver one ( which I.m sure would not be as much fun). Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks.

A kilo of dried fruit is £1.44 at the orange supermarket, and would only cost £6 or £7 to post to you! I'm sure we could work out a way to get it to you

Good plan, I might start mine tonight!

I tend to make a large square one and chop it into 3 slabs for my hampers.
