I have a small greenhouse and usually use a parasene type heater with one burner to keep it frost free at night throughout April.

We have been given another greenhouse (yay!) which is 12ft by 10ft and just wondered how every body else heats theirs ?.

We have an electric fan heater - it has a thermostat to set the temp.

Its very efficient at heating the whole of the greenhouse and most importantly, keeps the atmosphere quite dry (helps prevent seedlings damping off).

Electric is not cheap of course, but we have it on quite a low setting and the greenhouse is lined with bubblewrap to keep in a bit of heat.
It helps that the greenhouses are in the back garden so not too far to run a wire.

How about a black plastic dustbin, with water in it. It will heat up during the day withe sun and give off heat during the night abit like a night storage heater in reverse! I have tried this method and it does keep the ambient temp about a degree higher. This can be combined with other heating methods like manure and convetional heaters

I like the dustbin idea especially as we have two which are redundant following delivery of the wheely bins, will definately use that idea

I think we will install a fan heater as we have electric close by and parafin has become so expensive. We used to be able to buy it from a pump but for the last few years have only been able to source it from the local garden centre prepacked.

The hotbed idea is a good one too as there is a cattle yard adjacent to our house where the suckler herd are overwintered. We generally have a couple of loads deposited over the fence when they have the mammoth clean out.

Thanks for the advice

if you have two greenhouses i would probably heat one for the tender stuff and propogation and use the other as cold house for hardier stuff on its way outdoors!!
