After some online searching I found this...."The Animal By-Products Order 1999, derived from an EU Directive. No 'catering waste' can be fed to poultry or livestock or wild birds; catering waste is defined in the EU Regulation as 'all waste food including used cooking oil originating in restaurants, catering facilities and kitchens, including central kitchens and household kitchens.'
Dear dear lord. Apparently it is also now illegal to feed bread to ducks and crumbs to sparrows. I am assuming on the hen front that the problem was due to feeding mouldy or maggoty food, giving the hens food poisoning. What ever happened to common sense? We fed our hens daily with the stuff that was gathered over the previous 24 hours, potato peels were cooked up into the tradional hen mash with some 'thirds' taken from the pig food to thicken it up, the ducks on the canal would occasionally get a couple of stale slices of bread when the kids were little (not as I have seen families do, going with two or three new loaves of bread from the supermarket, most of which got wasted), and table cloths were shaken outside the back door for the birds. This is an EU directive but I have to say that most of 'peasants' living on small holdings across Europe will continue to do as they have for generations.....
Edited to add, with some annoyance, that on thinking about this, I have just changed my mind on the DNA storage debate. I was in favour of this, but if feeding a s*dding sparrow is now illegal, then I begin to understand why people are worried.... |
