I suspect the hand of a lawyer not the will of those involved. If the vet deteremins death was instant, there was no suffering or cruelty, depending how the law is phrased it may be the right 'legal' outcome.

I saw on the BBC today a story about three youths who kicked a baby deer to death recently.

Yes we know who and it's been reported to the RSPCA who said they'd investigate - do you think I should report to the police as well?

Ditto what VegPlot said. Even if it cannot be proved etc etc the police will have been informed of an incident, in case some other poor person has to register a similar complaint.

Well, the RSPCA have been, retrieved a very dead, very mangled chicken that had been shoved in their bin and hence was humming after the heat we had yesterday - but was definitely our missing one judging by the markings. RSPCA inspector was spun a tale of how the hen wandered into their garden, they put her onto the trampoline to keep her safe until they worked out who she belonged to and a local cat must have got in and killed her, they're ever so sorry etc.

So much of it doesn't ring true and so much of the story has been changed since we first heard it that I don't know what to believe any more. But with no reliable witnesses, and no conclusive evidence there is nothing that can be done. The RSPCA have a log of the report, visit and result and I will be keeping a very careful eye on my remaining hen from now.

The RSPCA should be renamed The Dog and Cat and Sometimes Horse Charity. Why, they don't know the differences between terrapins and tortoises - I wouldn't expect them to do anything in this case for which you have my sympathies.

I had a standup fight with the RSPCA last year when I found a cat that had been tortured to the extent he needed his ears and tail amputated. They wanted to put him down immediately. I refused and they'd promised beforehand to pay for any surgery necessary - any. And what's more I afterwards, doing all the hard work myself, found through the Cats Protection League that the poor boy had a home, an old disabled couple.

The cat got his operation and comes to visit us sometimes. He'd be dead if the RSPCA had its way. I won't support it. I do support other animal charities but the RSPCA works with a much narrower field of interest than its name implies.

Oh, and most serial killers start their evil careers with small animals. You've got some sickos nearby and should (a) get your hen another hen for company as quick as you can and (b) at the same time, either get some fencing or otherwise make your hens' living area as secure as you can, including a lock on the hen-house door.

As (I think) Judith recently commented, I'm ashamed to be part of the human race sometimes.

I know the psychology theory and I'd agree that the kids concerned have a crappy family life and it's no surprise they are how they are. Prime candidates for social workers steaming in and removing the kids......

The run is getting some sort of lock in the next day or so - the only way to the hen house is through the run as the restrictions the council place on us having hens is that they are securely penned at all times, ie: not free all over everyone's gardens. Also going hen shopping either Thurs or Fri, probably Thurs and will be getting a couple of POL hens from a local place so we'll be back up to three again. Might be temp homing a friend's birthday present hen while we're at it - but just for a few days at the same time as we have our new ones. Rainbow won't be alone for long.

What a horrible thing to happen Sarah! I'm really sorry to hear it! Sorry - I know it's a shame for kids who don't have a nice life and all, but neither do a lot of kids who don't go about torturing animals. Little shits. I hope they get theirs.

Hope your kids are okay with it all. Horrible.

My kids are upset but ok. I can actually find it in my heart to hope that the kids who did it can find a future without harming anything else along the way. I don't think they have much hope while living where they are, but I can hope.

This happened to my neighbour a few weeks ago. all the local kids knew who had done it so i rounded them all up with the promise of ice cream and "forgot" to mention the local PC was coming over. they were more than happy to grass the little sod up. He has now been charged with various offences, banned form keeping animals, had his dog removed and been suspended from school.

Im not sure if it will work but i did find him wondering around bored last week as all the others were in school so i got him to help me pull some old fencing down. i think he has learnt a lesson about doing things in small villages! hopefully he's learnt a few other lessons too.

Oh how truly horrid for you, and no form of redress, the little vile beasts that did it will no doubt think nothing of it, any human capable of destroying a life of any animal in such a way is capable of turning that onto humans and other animals.

Castrate the parents, and section the kids, and then castrate them when they are older, society doesn’t need bad seed being bred… you wouldn’t bred a vicious dog a rabid cow or a psychotic creature – well if you had any sense of any sort you wouldn’t

I’m sick and tired of hearing about how they have this issue and that problem and this need and that requirement… everyone has a sob story about how they were badly treated... Well I’m sorry, I know some truly do but the majority are malingering charlatan bandwagon hanger on’s. It’s not an excuse to do what you like without consequence; everybody unless you are certified as being incapable knows full well injury of any kind hurts… So by default if you deliberately injury something you know it hurts because its one of the basic human elements to survival that you avoid being hurt, and they admit and know they did wrong else they wouldn’t have concocted such a tale!

Contact social services and report the issue.

Just seen this - horrible - so sorry. I wonder how difficultit would be to see whether the death may, or may not have been caused by a cat? Or am I being naive (neither having seen the injuries nor being a keeper of chickens myself, I know nothing)? Anyway, I would have thought that a visit to the family by a member of the local constabulary wouldn't go amis and perhaps have more impact than people from the RSPCA.....
