Welcome Pigeonpease, from an Essex girl living in Sussex (i've been here 25 years but I still don't count as a local !! ) I also found white stiletto's are not practical footwear about the smallholding

I've only been in Sussex for two and half years (Londoner not Essex girl), but since moving here I found out that I had family in the area beween 1656 (and probably earlier) and somewhere between 1861 and 1871 so I'm claiming ancestral rights

I'm Sarah, married to Simon, 4 children, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 8 chickens & a small veg plot.

I've lived in Suffolk since I married 15 years ago (was Norfolk born & bred) & have had plans for keeping chickens (& maybe geese) & growing our own veg for years. We've grown dribs & drabs for a while, but this year finally got an area of garden cleared to grow our own veg. As to chickens...we built a chicken house & run around 6 years ago, Simon toddled off to get us 4 hens & came back with 4 cockerels (there followed a surreal conversation about how if cockerels laid eggs than he'd be the 1 who was currently heavily pregnant...). After that 1st foray into chicken keeping Simon lost enthusiasm & I had my hands full with baby #3 then baby #4.

This year everything seems to have happened at once - we finally got an area of garden properly cleared of tree roots & stumps (we live in woodland) so we could start our veg garden & 8 homeless chickens found there way to us via a friend of a friend who didn't have the room for them.

It's been a bit of a steep learning curve...not so much keeping the chickens, but sorting the veg garden. As a tractor driver Simon can only see the more intensive cram as much as possible into every square inch way where there's literally no room to get between beds/rows to weed, hoe, etc so there's lots of tweaking & learning we're both going to be doing over the coming seasons & years.

Oh & something else about me you may not have noticed...I do tend to waffle & ramble a tad...

Hello. Herefordshire calling. This forum looks like it might be a source of answers to the heap of questions I have about a whole range of topics. I'm new to the forum culture and I expect I'm doing something wrong already. Fairly new also to smallholding and I guess I need to toughen-up a bit on the business side of things otherwise I'll be carted off to the poorhouse along with my few sheep, geese and pigs.

Hello from West Sussex!

I live in a teeny tiny rented 2 bedroom terrace in the middle of a city with my boyfriend and baby, so we couldn't exactly downsize much more, but we do try to be as self sufficient as possible in those fairly narrow confines.

We have a five year plan (doesn't everyone?!) to rent/buy a bigger place with more space to grow our own veg and be as self sufficient as we can - blog address is (theoretically, this is my first post so it might not work) in my signature.
