I know that if you use wool with the lanolin left in a jumper / hat etc will "turn" the weather, but that a damp woolly like this can you leave you smelling a little like a sheep.
Is it possible to knit your jumper with fully scoured wool and then rinse it in water with something oily added to it, say linseed oil, to achieve the waterproof effect with out the smell?
You can re-lanolin a jumper just like you can with the woolen nappy covers.
I don't know if it makes you smell sheepy afterwards though I'll see if my bottle of disana stuff came in the move and if it did you are more than welcome to it

The title of this reminded me of the time my beloved knitted me an Aran Jumper not long after we got married. Took her ages as she hadn't be knitting very long, real labour of love. I had an emergency job on the old landrover and it was winter....you can guess the rest.
oily wool is ok in -25c or rain ,heavy but warm when challenged
smell well

don't use linseed, its a drying oil and eventually will turn your jumper into lino As has already been mentioned, the lanolin sold for nappy covers is your best bet for treating a desgreased wooly

IME the lanolising stuff doesn't get wet sheep in the rain. But you can also treat wool or other natural yarns with hemp oil/salve for a similar effect. Doesn't work as well as lanolin wash/cure though.
