Took a cycle ride out at lunchtime, came back with:

Chicken of the woods, from a ginormous stand of it that I estimate must weigh in the region of 15kg or more. I have picked something in the region of 3-4kg.

The prince (Agaricus augustus), a handfully of nice young specimens, the mushrooms I was actually out looking for.

And one solitary parasol, a variant shaggy parasol Macrolepiota procera var. hortensis.

Much better than I was expecting.

Found some lovely wild raspberries on tuesday evening whilst out mountain biking. Shame it was right at the top of the forest trail and I could barely breathe let alone collect them, plus lycra bike shorts aren't the best collecting medium. Still they made a nice treat before the scary downhill run.

Will the COTW be tough now? It makes excellent mushroom ketchup when bunged in with a couple of field mushrooms.

It's a later growth, so it's more or less perfect now. So far we've had chicken of the woods and courgette curry, chicken of the woods and courgette noodles. To break the monotony I was thinking about chicken of the woods and courgette soup later.

The ketchup sounds like a great idea, but I never seem to use mushroom ketchup when I make it. Am I missing out on some secret use for the stuff that eveyone else is in on and I'm not?

Have never tried mushroom ketchup, but I think this syndrome is a common once unless you are strict with yourself. It is easy to get caught up in the enjoyment of making something and lose sight of whether you will really use it.

Agree with that Jema, but I've bought mushroom ketchup before and couldn't really find a good use for it.

It's quite useful for pepping up gravies, adding to stews etc. I only use it occasionally though. Unless you want mushroom flavour without bits of mushroom for some reason it couldn't really be described as essential though.

I use it to enchance gravies and stews, and it's nice thickened up a bit and sprinkled on cheese on toast, a bit like worcester sauce. I only make it with those mushrooms that are past their best, and are no good for eating or drying, as you can strain the....ahem... protein content out.

Foraged about a pound of shaggy parasols today, left about the same amount as they had been well munched by something.

Have an oxtail in the fridge, so I feel something rich and hearty coming on.
