Is it possible I've found one in my garden?

There are loads of mushrooms popping up everywhere here. Our garden has not been touched with anything of a chemical nature for many years, so it's becoming an ideal habitat I hope

I'll go and take photos etc tomorrow.

In-fact I saw saw today so it's perfectly possible. However, there are some lookalikes. See if the cap and flesh bruise reddish. If it does then it's NOT A. auguste.

Every season someone says (in this forum) that it's a weird year for mushrooms. Is there ever a normal year?

You're looking at a few hundred species, in dozens of different habitats, with a vast number of environmental parameters that are in some cases dependent on each other and in others independent. So, no, there isn't any such thing as a year when a forager can't spot some anomalies
