Can't entirely say from that picture. Possibly an immature giant polypore.

Thanks Cab just googled ..looks possible. Tomorrow I shall try bruising the underside to see if it turns black. It is growing on the stump of a pittisporum that has recently been cut down. Can you recommend a good ID book please.

Looks like a giant polypore.......if it is, eat it now.

When they get too big they go bitter.

At the risk of sounding girly I hadn't even thought of eating it It's just if I don't know what something is I need to find out. Not knowing much/anything about fungi I wasn't sure where to start looking..there are so many. The books I have aren't great, but now I have a couple of names I can start googling etc. to find out more. Before the rain really sets in I'll go and look more closely, see if it bruises, texture etc.

Think I may be hooked !

OK today it is darker, it doesn't bruise when pressed, the texture is tight (no obvious gills like mushrooms) there is no stem it grows directly from the wood, the top is velvety and it smells ..well like a mushroom.

It's an early giant polypore:

I was wondering about this

https://www.rogersmushrooms.com/gallery/DisplayBlock~bid~6702~source~gallerychooserresult.asp

....it doesn't bruise or turn black. I read somewhere polypores do, is that correct. It does look similar to the link tough.

Maybe as it develops it will become more obvious ?

dont look like one to me guys i have loads of them my way and yeah they look a bit like them them but not much

as for books yes rogers mushrooms is good also the river cottage book by John wright is a good read and will stop you being so scared or edible types, Also a brilliant new book for id of mushrooms is Collins complete guide to British mushrooms and toadstools don't tell you the edibility of them but is the most complete book i have found and has multiple picture of most species

looks more like a greyling bracket to me postia tephroleuca (=Tryromyces tephroleucus) described as mild taste
