If I didn't already love mackerel, I would now have to try it.

Great article from a mackerel addict.

Haven't fished this year, but do have a bag of mackerel in the freezer from a friend

Guest, thanks for your commenst but I'm afraid that as an oily fish mackerel don't freeze to well. If you have a glut then it's often better to make something like gravad mackerel which keeps well in the freezer

They seem to freeze well if you smoke 'em.

Living so far from the sea, its very difficult to get good fish here, however a recent trip to tring farmers market (ironically supposed to be the furthest point from any cost in England!) discovered me a new smoked-things stall, which sold the best smoked mackeral I've ever had. A nice firm fish, with a not too overpowing smoky flavour - wonderful, with poached eggs on toast. Will buy extra next time for mackeral pate too!

Yep, smoked mackerel will freeze OK because a fair bit of the water content has been driven out. They are lovely if not oversmoked so they retain some moistness, supermarket smoked mackerel always seems a little hard.

Must admit I've never thought they froze any worse than other fish- still enjoyed them on the barbi afterwards... but will bow to the greater knowledge of a true connesseur.
Intend to try your mackerel recipe out tomorrow Jonnyboy. Sounds great. Unfortunately I'm not sure it will go so well with the pike I caught today otherwise I'd have had some fresher fish to play with!
