Never had one, don't want one - I wash up in the sink once a day, unless I've been doing vast amounts of cooking. Also I've never lived anywhere that has room to put one! Actually I lied when I said I have never had one - there was one (and a glass washer) in the pub I had, but I've never had one at home.

Mine has been used more in the last 24hrs than it has in the preceeding 12 months. Loaded it up last night whilst I was still relatively sober, was intending to put another load on before bed but I was too sloshed at 3.30 to be co-ordinated enough to get the plates in the rack, it is running again now and I will be putting another load in shortly. We did most of the pans and cutlery from last nights blow-out in the sink this morning, but the plates and glasses are being done in the dishwasher because I'd rather sit on my btm on here than spend any more time at the today.

It should take longer, or do you do normal loads at half speed? And if you can do two days in the same time and water as one meal, why are you using time and resources so inefficiently on a regular basis?

You can- put your hands on the front of it when it's going. My dads dog will sit there on cold days.

Oh, and if stating that using a method for doing (x) that uses less energy and time is preferable to another method is so controversial we can't touch it, then the forum is broken beyond belief. Its a ridiculous thing to have a spat over, but it would be more ridiculous if on a site devoted to sustainability and self reliance couldn't go there.

The problem is that some of the pro-dishwasher comment (that which Silas responded to in such a way as to get his wrist slapped) has been nigh on hysterical, which provoked a predictable response and escalation. I can, if I'm honest, see his point here; it would appear that to dare suggest dishwashers are at any time a bad thing is almost akin to growing a dark, pointy beard, wearing a cape and a top hat and tying a screaming silent movie heroine to a railway line. I can see why he finds that frustrating.

Frankly some of the comments against dishwashers are laughable which doesn't do much for a discussion either. However, when they got posted I thought it best to ignore them.

I agree with Cab. I would never want a dishwasher. I have a Belfast sink and washing-up takes very little time. I find it quite therapeutic. I can have it done in the time it takes to stack and empty a dishwasher and I don't end up with food caked onto dishes and spoons, that have to be washed again.

We do not have a dishwasher.

DP would like one. I (some time ago now) found the details of one that I felt I could live with (uses 6L a wash, made in the EU - was Italy but now made in either Germany or the Czech rep. - no drying cycle other than on one particular setting....) and it was/is horribly expensive and funnily enough with the dumping of the London job for a local one all talk of a dishwasher has faded away....

Mind you - getting a new boiler last summer a) cleaned us out entirely and b) means that the water comes through the pipes hot in under 2L (old boiler was so bad that I used to wash up with a kettle (1.5L) of boiling plus 1L to reduce it down to a safe temp - the washingup bowl is a 6L one btw - as it could take some time and around 30L of water before it would dribble through luke warm, unless the heating was also on when it would burn you alive suddenly about 20L in).

Anyhow.... lol... the result is that all dishwasher talk has, for the time being, ceased. I wash up once a day, unless it is baking day when it can be 3 sinks full of water then due to the need to clean bowls between cakes and bread and whatever) and just make sure that there is enough crockery for that to be the case....

Seems no better a comment than the one from Silas, to be honest.
