Why is this so hard to find. I've been e-baying and googling for ages. I can find lots of lovely natural chunky wool, but not a really standard jumper pattern to match it.

Like This sort of thing, not the colour or even the ribbing, but the bog standard shape.

Can anyone help?

That shape looks like the jumper I've just started : round neck, drop shoulders. The pattern I'm using has an aran centre panel, which takes up less than half the front area.

Question for the experienced knitters : if I knitted my pattern totally plain, would it still turn out roughly the same size as the Aran ? Bigger ? Smaller ?

If about the same, perhaps Penny could borrow my pattern if she can't find one she likes.

Penny, I;ll find the linky for my pattern so you can see whether it would be what you wanted.

eta : here it is This was the one I particularly liked.
ETA : linky doesn't work directly, it's pattern 209 in mens sweaters section

Try charity shops - they often have a pile of old knitting patterns and you might find a nice simple 1950s/60s design that would suit. Yarn shops also usually have a selection simpler pattern styles too.

There are knitting software programmes that you can download, plug in your gauge and desired measurements, and it spits out a plain vanilla knitting pattern, I think the one I tried out was Sweater Wizard, but will have to check when I got home, the free trial version was plenty good enough for things like this

Cables pull the knitting in, so if you knit an aran pattern without the cables, it will come out wider, how much depends on how complex the cables were.

Penny: just do a test swatch to see if your gauge matches that recommended. If it does, fine, if it's smaller then change to larger needles, if it's bigger, then you need smaller needles.

I have this book which gives all sizes, all sleeve shapes, all wool thicknesses to allow you to knit pretty much anything. it also has a handy techniques section at the back
