Ok… so whilst speaking on the new (as in 2 weeks) BT provided phone it suddenly stopped working. The line was playing up and has been checked by BT as we have a crackle and it’s been like that since sky fitted (last autumn) all their jiggery pokery nonsense for the boys.

Sky say its not them their chaps been out to confirm this, BT are adamant its not their equipment, we had a brand new line fitted 8 months ago, so its not the line, (they’re happy to come check at a fee of £130 call out and £90 per hour or broken hour duration … bless them, they are too kind ) so if its not the equipment its not either parties fault, this is the third phone to give up the ghost, whose is it? Mine???? …bound to be… I’m the mug at the end of the list

Have the spare phone plugged in some cheapo from Argos – lasted up to now the longest – but every time I callout the broadband links dropped and everything goes offline and BB has to search and restart. I get the red, amber blue lights flashing randomly on the hub.

It’s becoming a pain in the posterior – I’d be better on dial up at this rate!

Anyone have a clue?

If you connect phone directly to wall socket, do you get crackle?

Do you have a spare mcirofilter to try?

Go back to basics, check the main socket where it enters the property, disconnect the front part of the main socket and you will see another port to push the phone in, try 2 different working phones, this way you can prove the fault is outside i.e. in the BT network (Openreach) and get a witness so if an engineer calls and its all ok at the time of testing he will charge you.
Take it from me you didn't get a brand new line, maybe you had some new wire to the house, but you would more than likely had an old cable going back to the exchange.
Best of luck

yes it crackles if i plug it into the wall directly

i do have another microfilter, but that was the one i swapped over the lasttime it had a fault before the new line was installed

yes that’s the bit we had from the pole to the house, it is up in the air, not underground, we have to make sure anyone delivering with a crane doesn't accidently drag it down

The exchange is probably out of the ark we have a digit less on our numbers than most of the country

How about cancelling the whole lot (who needs BT and their line rental anyway with all the free calls you can get from a mobile provider) and look into seeing if you can get a rural wi-fi broadband connection, or a decent one from Sky.

BT have been pants since we moved here and now get nothing from us at all. We are lucky in having a local wi-fi provider who works with villages in our area to get an aerial or two up in the neighbourhood. We have just seen a friend's hugely speedy broadband connection, where they had no signal before, and are about to sign up.

Hope you get sorted, it must be sooo frustrating.

That sounds just like the sort of thing that would be ideal for us in Devon. How did you find your local provider?

I had a similar problem to you last year & it took three visits from open reach engineers to put it right.
Turned out when they put a new cable in three years ago the idiots forgot to seal the hole where the cable entered the building so damp was entering the BT box & had tracked back up the cable by over a foot.
BT tried to charge me for the second engineers visit because he didn't find the fault (complete beginner, had been working in a call centre a few months before), even though the third one did, & the blame laid squarely at their door.
If I could go Wi-fi I would but I've checked all the providers & the cover here is rubbish.

Assuming both phones crackle when connected to the master socket, everything points to the problem being external. Seems like you'll need to take a robust line (so to speak ) with BT, similar to Tavascarow's experiences.

oooo no, i sooo don't want... i haven't enough life left to sit and argue with the BT incompetents - it took me 3 calls and just over 45 minutes and a chat to a supervisor to get them to resend the phone it took me an age to get them to send out in the first place ... i can't do it... hot pointy things, sticking in and eyes suddenly seems appealing

i'm going to investigate netties suggestions
