OK it's time to start planting a few seeds ready for summer.

Toms and chillis indoors or in the greenhouse with a propergator
soak the seed for an hour and then plant two or three to a small pot

Lettace in the greenhouse borders (risky, but worth a go)
sprinkle the seed and cover with fleece

Broadbeans
Striaght into the open ground, worth covering with a cloche or fleece if available

Early carrots in the greenhouse borders
sprinkle the seed and cover with fleece

Order Spuds and get ready to chit

Just mention - if you don't know bin any seeds that float they won't germinate.

....and my lettuce is still going strong, despite a few herd frosts !

Wow. Sowing seeds now?

I'll get told off if I even look at the seed box at this time of year

Still, this year we've invested in a grow lamp for the citrus and bananas in the spare room (who needs guests when you can have a tool store, mini-jungle and wine and beer cellar instead ) so maybe I can get a bit of a head start. The earliest I think I've planted anything yet is chilis in Jan.

Toms and chillis already? Really? Wow, I' usually wait till February. Will that bring the harvest forward by much?

Don't think I could do anything that fiddly on Boxing Day.

Bit early for me, no cover you see, but my seed order arrived this morning, so a bit of planning will be done over the weekend.

Couple of weeks ago, I cleared some ground to plant some garlic. Didn't use it all, so I had a rush of blood to the head and sowed three lots of oriental veg under those plastic bell cloche thingies. More in hope than anticipation, but blow me if it hasn't all germinated. Might need some fleece if we have a freeze, but I have high hopes of some fresh greens in February!

Most of those orientals are quite hardy, but then it probably gets quite chilly there...

It does get a bit parky up on this hill. Wind is the biggest problem though.

They'll probably do fine then, especially under fleece

Have you got a heated greenhouse then or do you just keep them in pots indoors?

Just indoors until they have sprouted then as I pot them up I put them out in a greenhouse. I use a hotwater bottle and growers fleece if I think there will be a frost, I have used tea light candles too, Somewhere I've got a parafin heater but I never really got on with it - eagerly waiting Marks instructions though !
